PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE
November Blues (or Gray)
Week 67 of the photographic documentary of my daily life
This week my husband learned what November in Germany means. You don’t get to see the sun from Monday to Sunday and you’re only guessing what time sunrise and sunset are. But it actually doesn’t matter. It gets dark by 5 pm.
Fog is covering valleys and just your entire life. Fine drizzle is the rain you don’t notice when it stops. So you never know if it’s just foggy or actually raining as well.
Welcome to November blues (or grays).
I can’t believe it. It was foggy all morning long. I’m lying, the fog was still hanging on the ground around 12pm. But that didn’t make us change our plans. We wanted to have a braai, and so we did.
And guess what? The sun came out and burnt off all the fog. Or maybe it was the smoke and heat from our fire…
(And this ended up being the only day this week I would get to see anything of the sun.)

The following day I was waiting all day long for the fog to clear so that I could take my picture of the day but I gave up eventually. The fog had only lifted that much so I could see the village. But the top of the hill remained hidden.

Today my mom and my grandma came by for a visit. We decided to go to the game park my husband and I went to about a week ago. I thought my grandma would enjoy seeing deer and other animals.
My husband was calling the animals as we got close to the fence. My mom was fascinated by how they reacted to his call and actually came towards him. She tried it a bit later too but was very disappointed when it didn’t work.
We saw lots of deer from near and far. But also the herd of mouflon came close to us. In another area, we got to watch (and smell) a few wild boars.

I didn’t do anything outside today and it was dark already when I realized I didn’t take my photo of the day. I looked up trying to find out what to capture indoors when my eyes fell onto my line of pictures and I had to smile.
Years ago I bought an InstaxMini. I don’t use it often. I take one or two pictures on special occasions or when I meet friends after a long time not seeing them. And then I hang up the images on this magnetic string. Marked with the location and date.
And this collection of photographs together with the two metallic strings and the magnets travel with me anywhere in the world. Whenever I move to a new place I first hang them up.
And all of a sudden I got a new home.

Today I was planning all day long to take a night shot for the photo of the day. But since the fog didn’t lift (really unexpectedly, haha) I had to improvise. I first wanted to capture just the lights of town but it came out as a boring shot.
Then I pulled this rose into the frame with the village’s lights in the background and the whole scene looked better. I could have probably pulled the rose bigger into the frame. But hey, something to learn for the next time.

Yes, it is November. And this is how every day looks like. From sunrise to sunset. I mean, we don’t get to see any of those but I assume sunset should be round about now…

Today I saw sun rays falling into our living room and jumped up from the couch to witness the wonder. Behind a thick layer of clouds, the sun tried to push through. For about 5 minutes. That was it. That much about me getting Vitamin D.
Just past 3 pm, we went for an afternoon hike. That was when the picture of the tree was taken. Around 5 pm I took the second picture on our way home. It was completely dark and the lights had gone on. But this specific house was different. It has Christmas lights on. As the first one (or only one) of our village.
