Not Being Beautiful Is An Asset — Here Are Four Solid Reasons Why

#1 Fewer Maniacs.

Image by Joshua J. Cotten on Unsplash

Today in the street I saw the guy who always asks pretty girls what time it is. He has multiple disorders, so he looks strange. But he uses his condition to hit on girls. You can’t reject a person with special needs like a regular guy, so you feel uncomfortable about his advances. He knows it and doesn’t give up easily.

I was never his target. My sister was.

She’s taller and more beautiful than me, with almond-shaped eyes and strawberry blonde hair. Me? I’m the family’s ugly duckling. Even my mother was so good-looking that a man in the street recently told her she had the most beautiful legs 30 years ago. Objectification? Yes. But every woman craves to be told she’s beautiful, not smart.

I spent years moaning about what’s wrong with my head and shoulders. Over time I accepted my mediocre looks. But that “lack of opportunities” also brought me some benefits. I’ll give you four.

#1 Fewer Maniacs

At high school, my beautiful sister always had admirers but she also couldn’t walk into our building peacefully. Once a 30-something drunk neighbor blocked her way for a game of seduction. Another neighbor, as old as our dad, invited her to his apartment to give him a massage. Unknown men would follow her in the street.

Average-looking girls are also in danger. At ten, I saw an old man’s penis because he needed to ventilate it next to a schoolgirl. Luckily, that was among my worst experiences.

Women are more careful about their moves because some men see an invitation when there’s none. But beauties are magnets even in a crowd. Nice guys hesitate to approach them but idiots with agendas don’t. More doesn’t always mean better quality.

Also, they don’t need to stick out. Plain-looking women do, so they use their other advantages.

#2 A Captivating Personality

I had this classmate in high school guys were crazy about. Huge blue eyes, a natural blonde, 5′ 10. Full lips, big breasts, long legs, and now you want her number.

But she had no style with her Elmer Fudd hat and checked jacket as if she went hunting in Yorkshire. She also had no sense of humor but loved to crack jokes. Overall, she wasn’t much fun. My classmate was the kind of girl who needed care and attention but couldn’t seduce you with her talk because all she said was cliché. But with guys, she didn’t need to talk anyway, so there was no need to exercise the skill.

If you get things easier because you’re beautiful, you don’t have to be funny or eloquent to get what you want. And that effort often makes you more interesting for other people.

Beauties have so many doors open it seems they can have it all. Still, you, the plain girl, often end up better than them because you try harder and make better choices.

And now we come to our third reason why your ordinary looks are better than beauty.

#3 Solid Future, If You’re Lucky

That classmate of mine married a son of a rich small-town businessman. They had a luxury wedding and got a newly built house. She was secured with a well-paid job and her life looked settled.

But her husband would gamble and fistfight. To him, she soon became a part of the furniture. To get him jealous, she’d buy herself flowers and say she got it from a client. He didn’t care.

A decade has passed and she’s still married but raises her kids alone in the capital while her husband has “some business to do” in his hometown. She is financially secured but regularly flirts with her high-school crushes from 25 years ago. She didn’t get the care she wanted. My hot classmate could have done much better.

No one knows what’s going to happen at old age. But good-looking women often try to secure their future early by choosing money. Often, that money isn’t enough for a happy life.

Also, they rely on their looks, unlike you, duckling. And they are transient.

#4 You Won’t Feel You’ve Lost Your Identity as You Age

When the first lines start to appear on their faces, beautiful women panic, even suffer from depression.

Still, there’s a way out of it all — facelift, eye lift, fillers, silicone implants, and all that multi-billion-dollar nip and tuck. And you start to discretely correct one shortcoming after another until you get Frozen like that 50-something Elsa from Hollywood who can’t move her face anymore, so no one gives her a role.

But even if you successfully rejuvenate yourself, new girls always come and you can’t make yourself the talk of the town at 40 unless you cheat on your rich husband with your divorce lawyer. You can’t fight growing old, so better embrace it in a luxury yoga retreat. Even better, spend it gardening or with books and friends.

Many beautiful women often look at glossy mags instead of novels. They share kitchen recipes and click on clothes when they could invest their time in something more fruitful and creative.

Conclusion:

It’s hard to write a generalization and not make a mistake. Just like all swans aren’t white (There are black ones, remember?), we can’t say that all beautiful women lack charm or a sense of humor. Also, we can’t say that plain-looking women always fare better in life.

But beauty has its share of temptations: too many shortcuts and too much attention from everyone. And let’s not forget other women’s jealousy.

Still, if you aren’t too beautiful, there are four advantages you generally have over beauties:

  • Fewer maniacs to chase you and be your preacher-teacher.
  • Having a captivating personality because you have to make an effort.
  • A better chance of having a solid future because you have to work hard and make your decisions wisely.
  • You won’t feel depressed because you aren’t the most beautiful in a cafe anymore.

If a fairy godmother landed on my pillow tonight and gave me Audrey Hepburn’s face and Halle Berry’s body, I wouldn’t know what to do with them. I’d be embarrassed by all the unsolicited attention because I never got used to too much of it.

And maybe I’d want everything now because I’d know how powerful my physical appearance on other people is. I probably wouldn’t know when to stop wanting things because there would always be something new I could get. And I’d be afraid of losing my beauty power as I age. Suppose that wouldn’t make me happy in the long run.

Beauty comes with a burden. Appreciate your lack thereof.
