Summary

The article emphasizes that no individual is truly "self-made," as success and failure are influenced by the support and interactions with others, as well as external circumstances.

Abstract

The article "None of Us Is $elf-Made!" argues that the concept of being 'self-made' is a myth. It suggests that every person's achievements and setbacks are deeply intertwined with the help and influence of others, from family and friends to mentors and even strangers. The author, Kathryn Leroy, reflects on her own experiences and the broader societal narrative that often glorifies individual success without acknowledging the collective effort behind it. Using the metaphor of a cowpea seed, the article illustrates that just as the seed relies on external conditions to grow, humans rely on a network of support to succeed. The article encourages gratitude towards those who contribute to one's journey and reminds readers that both success and failure are part of life's lessons.

Reading this piece: Standing Out Doesn’t Mean Alone by Kathryn Leroy. She says: No one ever really goes it alone. Who stands behind you? On graduation day, I may have been the one walking across the stage, but I was never alone. And I am forever grateful.

Her power of words sends my brain ranting on an expedition. Lol

‘They are ‘self-made.’ Mr. So and so is a self-made millionaire. She too? Really? Oh, yea.’

None of us are self-made. Someone gave Someone an idea. Someone lends a hand. Someone called Someone who knew Someone. Someone opened a door for Someone. Someone lied to get Someone in. Someone pretended they knew Someone.

Someone stand surety for that loan that got you started.

Someone loan you their life savings, college fund, rent money, or their last dollar. The essential resources you need, like the body, need water, were given or loaned to you by Someone.

Someone made a sacrifice somewhere to help your dream come true.

All of our life journeys and route are different. We end up with success or failure, and both teach life lessons. Your location helps. Who and what you know help. Your determination and perseverance fueled by something start a fire.

The influences from your parents, friends, foes, environment, upbringing, a teacher, a stranger who did the right thing, the community you live in, a movie you watched, something Someone said or didn’t say, a bet, a dare, pain, poverty, hunger, greed, etc.

Something from Someone or something ignited a fire that gave you a reason to want better. Want more. Change your life. Change and rewrite history. Prove Someone or something wrong. Make a name for yourself. Compete with a friend, a foe, or your father. The loss of a loved one. The injustice of humanity, a family, or a friend. Ego. It’s easy. I can do it too. Can’t you do that? The will and love to change our world for the better. These are just a few of the flames that started the fire that led to many owning the term and convincing themselves that they are ‘self-made.’

The right time is significant because failure comes before success and humans need a reason not to give up. That reason comes from Someone or something.

Look at this pea. It’s called cowpeas. It’s on the concrete.

Cowpeas on concrete. Image by Annelise Lords

Cowpeas thrive in poor dry conditions, growing well in soils up to 85% sand. This makes them a particularly important crop in arid, semidesert regions where not many other crops will grow. The optimum temperature for cowpea growth is 30 °C (86 °F), making it only available as a summer crop for most of the world. Says https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowpea

Success and failure have their own home, location, environment, area, city, town, region, place, etc.

Depending on the location, weather, climate, time of day, and traffic, the cowpeas might stay there for a few days until it rots. Or a hungry bird or insect might find it, eat it, then it comes out into their poop, hopefully in soil. It will grow if it falls on soil, dirt, or sand. All three possess the main ingredient that will assist in its growth and development. If not, it rots.

If it’s windy, then the wind might blow it away into the soil. If it’s winter in the Northern part of the world, it will freeze. Months later, it will thaw but won’t be able to grow. Most seeds are perishable and won’t last long outside of warmth or soil.

Without the assistance of Someone or something, this seed will perish. You and I are not much different.

Stop believing that anyone is ‘self-made!’ Someone is always responsible for your failure and success. Remember to return and thank them. For loss, too, because of lessons learned.
