Netflix Just Announced a Huge Audio Upgrade

Hundreds of existing titles will be getting spatial audio.

Good news for Netflix Premium subscribers!

The streaming giant is rolling out its spatial audio technology, which it first began testing with season four of Stranger Things.

According to Netflix, you can now enjoy spatial audio on over 700 of its most popular titles, including Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

To determine if a title offers this new feature, look for the spatial audio icon in the program details.

What is spatial audio?

Spatial audio is a technology that creates a three-dimensional sound experience, allowing sounds to be positioned and moved in virtual space.

This enhances the audio experience, making it more immersive and allowing the listener to feel as if they are surrounded by sound.

In film, television, and music, spatial audio can create a more realistic and engaging experience for the viewer or listener.

Spatial audio technologies like Dolby Atmos and Sennheiser’s Ambeo are commonly used to create a more dynamic soundstage for movies, games, and music.

More about Netflix’s spacial audio feature

However, it’s important to note that this technology is not the same as Dolby Atmos.

Instead, Netflix has opted for Sennheiser’s Ambeo technology, designed for two-channel devices such as TVs, tablets, and phones with stereo speakers. And, if you use premium headphones, you can expect an even better audio experience.

But there’s a catch. This new spatial audio feature is only available to Premium subscribers. In addition, Netflix is also increasing the number of supported devices for offline viewing from four to six.

This means that if you’re a Premium subscriber, you can download more shows for offline viewing.

While this change is a positive one for Premium subscribers, it’s worth mentioning that there is some negative news surrounding Netflix.

The company is cracking down on password sharing, which means that if you want to watch Netflix in more than one household, you will have to pay more.

Furthermore, if you’re away for more than seven days, you won’t be able to watch Netflix from abroad. The cost of adding extra people to your account has not been announced yet, but if you don’t pay, they will simply be blocked.

Netflix is hoping that this crackdown will help raise revenues, but given that its Premium service is already one of the most expensive streaming services available, it’s possible that this move may not bring in the desired amount of money.

In fact, if this change results in a negative experience for legitimate users, it could drive people away from the service.

Final Words and Takeaways

Netflix has made its spatial audio technology, powered by Sennheiser’s Ambeo, available on over 700 of its most popular titles, with the spatial audio icon indicating its presence.

The feature is limited to Premium subscribers and can be experienced with headphones for the best sound.

Netflix is also increasing the number of supported devices for offline viewing from four to six.

However, the company is cracking down on password sharing, requiring an extra fee for multiple households and limiting overseas viewing to seven days. The company hopes this move will raise revenue, but it may drive away users.
