In the mid-1980s, I was on cloud nine after wrapping up my master’s degree, which involved a challenging mix of major thesis and coursework. My academic journey reached a pivotal point when my supervisor urged me to craft an impactful paper encapsulating three years of intensive research that had withstood rigorous academic scrutiny.

This was a strategic move for my doctoral aspirations. My supervisor floated the idea of submitting the paper to a top-tier journal, a move that could significantly strengthen my chances of securing a scholarship from the Federal government. Back then, funding a six-year doctoral program was no walk in the park, and this opportunity could make the financial puzzle fall into place.

I poured my heart and soul into crafting that paper for three months. It wasn’t just about getting words on paper but about sculpting a masterpiece to achieve my goals. After another month of relentless self-editing, I eagerly dispatched it to a circle of esteemed friends, all decked out with their coveted doctoral degrees from that era.

Their feedback was a mixed bag of positivity and negativity. Surprisingly, the critical feedback became the beacon guiding my revisions. Those critiques, pointing out the gaps and blind spots, were the gold dust that polished my content to a shine.
