National Take Down The Christmas Tree Day; If You Haven’t Already

Awareness and the Editor’s Pick of Love-Related Stories

January 6, 2023, awareness day text image created by the author using CanvaDesign

Well, here we are, January 6, 2023. The first week of the new year is nearing its end, closing out the holiday season. Gone, another Christmas, just like that, and as delightful as all the decorations and lights are, it is time to pack it up and put it all away until next time.

Yes, folks, it is time to take down the Christmas tree!

Ultimately a personal decision; I don’t necessarily elect one specific day to take my tree down.

Some people, like one of my daughters, pack it all up after dinner on Christmas evening. 😂

Other people dictate New Year’s Day as an ideal time.

Indeed there are many days to choose from.

I suppose some people are in it for the long haul, but how long is too long?

I mean, Santa Claus came to town and left already; do you really need the Christmas tree hanging around when the Easter bunny comes a hopping?

If decision-making is not your thing, fear not.

According to my research, today, January 6, is the day!

Brief History: Origins of Taking Down the Christmas Tree Day

Counting from the day after Christmas, there is the celebration of the twelve days of Christmas, ending on January 6.

Rooted in Christianity, dating back to the fourth century, the twelfth night marks the end of the Christmas season and the eve of Epiphany, also known as Christian Feast Day.

Depending on tradition (whether counting from Christmas day or the day after), some people celebrate January 5 as the twelfth night.

Yes, a little confusing.

But January 6 begins its own celebration, honoring the arrival of the Three Kings or Wise Men.

Reenacting the story of the Wise Men blessing the baby Jesus holds some celebratory traditions; baking a King’s cake, candlelight on Epiphany, and the Blessings of the Maji.

Taking down the Christmas tree on January 6 highlights the transition from one phase of the holiday season to another.

To add to the confusion, some Roman Catholics keep their tree up until February 2, which observes the presentation of Jesus to the Temple.

During my research, I also discovered that some superstitions say leaving the Christmas tree up after January 6 is bad luck. 😳

For the more spiritually inclined as opposed to religious, such as myself, I will leave my beautiful little angel wing-themed tree up until midmonth, so I can enjoy the beauty of her white and silver ornaments centered around the angels.
