My Story is #1 on Google’s SERP

I am not an SEO expert, but here is how I think it happened.

When I wrote about my experience of Tony Robbins’ Virtual Comeback Challenge, I didn’t expect to end up at the #1 spot on Google's Search Engine Results Page (SERP), but that is exactly what happened.

It is also at #1 for the search term What I thought of Tony Robbins Comeback Challenge. Additionally, it shows up on the first page, but not at #1 spot, for several other search terms.

Life is full of surprises.

I do not know how it ended up in the #1 spot. I am not an SEO expert.

The only thing I did to help the SEO is that I used the “more settings” under the three dots and filled in what I thought would be an appropriate description of my story.

Tony Robbins’ reputation as the best motivational and performance enhancement expert is well-earned, but why is he so disrespectful to other people?

My review of the event was a mixed bag of pluses and minuses. I received some benefits, but I also felt some disappointments.

I wrote an honest take on my experience. I suppose honesty pays off when you least expect it.

The results surprised me.

The next morning I noticed a spike in my views, so I checked to see where it was coming from. It was this story, and over 75% of the traffic was coming from Google. I was happy but didn’t think more about it.

But the spike has continued. As of this morning, it is still showing that 89% of all traffic is external, and 87% of that is from Google. That translates to 77.7% of ALL traffic is coming through Google.

Here is the most interesting part. While in the past, I’ve had a few stories that received google love in views, the reading ratio was usually around 15%. This one is staying at a consistent 48%. Not only is google sending traffic, but about half of them are also reading the story, which is amazing.

Here is my takeaway.

Opportunities to write are available in everyday events.

I have been writing consistently for the last eight months; more consistent some months than others, but I have published over 250 pieces in eight months of writing on Medium.

I learned as I went along, and one thing I do without fail nowadays is to fill out the SEO description for every story I write. It is something I learned from Holly Jahangiri, who has been blogging for more than a decade.

Though Holly is relatively new to Medium, her background in technical writing has enabled her to decode the “back office” of Medium Editor. You should follow her if you aren’t already doing so.

Tony’s Comeback Challenge ended today, so it would be interesting to see how that affects the results. Would people still be searching for it? If so, for how long?

As always, thank you for reading and responding.
