My Mother is Homophobic
But she has gay friends.
“I’m just joking. They are my best friends in the world.”
“Then, why use a slur for them when you tell me your stories?”
Her giggle turns into a sober face.
“I get it. I’m sorry.”
“You can’t accept all of the emotional support they give you when you are at your lowest point and then, turn around and call them a name when they are not in the same room as you.”
“Fine! I said I get it.”
Awkward silence.
“Look… I have nothing against gays.”
I sense this is not going to be good.
“But… Would you feel this strongly if it was your son?”
Pause. I swallow my anger and think of what I am about to say.
“Mom… I am sorry to disappoint you but… I love my son no matter what. Now and forever.”
