Welcome back. March is moving along quickly. May I say that time is marching on? And the weather this month has been variable to say the least. However, for March, this is to be expected here in the Northeast. Just this week alone featured a warm Spring-like day at almost 70 degrees, a snowstorm (6 inches) 3 days later, 2 more Spring-like days in the 40s, and another even bigger snowstorm (12 inches) is expected Saturday! Phew!

Any way you look at it, Spring is getting very close and even if we get snow, it melts much more quickly. The sun is much warmer than a few months ago and the days are getting longer. And starting this Sunday even longer days are promised as Daylight Savings starts.

Just last week my son and I enjoyed a great day of cross-country skiing in Adirondack Park. Great skiing conditions on expertly groomed trails. Two days later we had that beautiful near 70-degree day. The weather that day awakened the gardener in me and I broke out the seeds. I ended up planting onion, leek, and scallion seeds.

Are these the first seeds I started this year? Nope. Actually, about a month ago I started some kale, lettuce, Chinese cabbage, and Bok Choi seeds outdoors. In the snow! Don’t believe me? Check out my article here.

On Sunday, March 6th, I started Sweet Spanish Onions, Primor Leeks, and Green Scallions. I used containers I got a few years ago that work well. They have snap-on lids with vents that help keep in humidity yet allow for air circulation.

I used Miracle-Gro potting mix which works well as it is a light potting mix that helps maintain even moisture and provides plant food as well. It is a good idea to use a quality soil mix. After planting, place the containers in a warm location. It is not necessary to place them in the sun for germination to occur. It is more important to choose a consistently warm location. A heating mat can also be used to keep the containers warm.

In a few weeks, I will start my tomatoes. As I love heirloom tomatoes, I have chosen some familiar varieties and some varieties that I have never grown to try this year. Stay tuned. Tomatoes. For me the main event!

The latest forecast video from Direct Weather:

Farmers’ Almanac Forecast:

Again, a very interesting forecast for March 12th-15th: Storm tracks from Tennessee Valley to Cape Cod, delivers 1–2 feet of heavy snow over central and northern New England, northern NY. Rain south of the storm track.
