Embracing Retirement-Have You Tried Cross-Country Skiing?

Volume 15-A Great Outdoor Activity For Retirees

Welcome back to my series on embracing retirement. It’s been a while since my last article, in which I gave tips to help reduce stress during the holidays and to find the joy in the season. Are you tired of the snow and cold? It’s a long winter. Maybe get outside and give cross-country skiing a try. You may be surprised how much fun it is. For me, it is easier on my knees, legs and back than hiking is. And it does wonders to lift your spirits.

After a slow start, winter has settled in here in central New York State and we now have a good snow base. Prior to Martin Luther King Day, we had no snow base. Yes, we had five or six small snowfalls in November and December, but it melted quickly each time. Now it looks as if the snow is here to stay, as below normal temperatures continue at least for the short term.

How to Get Started-I Recommend Renting Skis Before You Buy

I have been cross-country skiing since the early 1980s. I still have my original skis. I had to replace the boots about 10 years ago. However, the first few times, I rented equipment from our local ski shop. Nowadays, it may be hard to find a ski shop near you let alone one that rents equipment. It may be easier to find a ski area that has trails and also rents equipment. The closest one for me is about 40 minutes away. Our local ski shop closed years ago.

Trying to ski before you buy equipment is the way to go. Not only can you give skiing a try, if you go to a ski area, they will most likely have groomed trails. For a beginner, groomed trails are much easier to navigate. If you like skiing and are able to do it, then you can look into purchasing your own skis.

Compared to downhill skiing, the cross-country variety is much more affordable. Prices, however, are a bit more than in the early 80's! Once you have your skis, boots, and poles, you are good to go. I rarely pay to go skiing as I mostly ski New York State Forest land. I have also gone downhill skiing a few times on beginner trails. An expert I am not; it is fun but harder on the body for sure. One of my biggest challenges was mastering getting on and off the ski lift!

The Many Benefits of Cross-Country Skiing; Is it Senior-Friendly?

I can guess what you’re thinking. Skiing? With sore knees, arthritis, etc.? I thought the same after I tore a meniscus in my right knee about four years ago. But I was able to ski again. And then after I tore the meniscus in my left knee this past spring. Still skiing. And the arthritis in my back, for which I receive steroid injections. Skiing seems to help it.

Of course I had physical therapy for each of these issues, which helped tremendously. And I take it easy. However, I have found that cross-country skiing is better for me than sitting around. It is relatively easy on my knees and back. It really is a low impact activity.

In addition to keeping you moving and limber, another obvious benefit is the cardiovascular workout. It is exhilarating to be out in the cold crisp air and glide along a carpet of snow. Just enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Can’t beat it.

As I mentioned above, I try to take it easy. I try to ski in areas that are mostly flat, or with gentle hills. I try not to fall anymore. If there is a lot of snow, it does cushion any falls. I also try to wear multiple layers, including snow pants which provide more cushioning.

I used to ski on trails through the woods, oftentimes breaking the trail as I go. That is difficult and I normally don’t do that these days. I have found that skiing on snowmobile trails is wonderful. It allows you to glide along with ease. I am still out in the woods, but on a nice packed surface. The only thing better is an area that has groomed and set track trails.

So if you’re looking for a new outdoor adventure, cross-country skiing may be for you. Give it a try. Take it slow. You may just discover a new hobby that will allow you to enjoy your retirement even more.
