My Almost Daily Journal-Sorting Through My Vegetable Seeds and Planning For the Upcoming Growing Season/Another Artic Blast Coming
Volume 16-Tag Along With Me on My Sometimes Boring Sometimes Interesting Sometimes Humorous Journey Through Life
Welcome back once again. Another week is coming to a close. Time goes so fast, even when you’re retired. I thought once I retired things would slow down drastically. Not really the case, although life is definitely more relaxing.
Sorting Through Seeds
Every year, usually in January, I open up my seed container and sort through what remains. Since I haven’t looked inside in quite a few months, it is always a discovery process once again. Some packets forgotten for sure.
For me this serves several purposes. The main reason is to throw out seeds that are more than a year old. So for this growing season, I will still keep packets dated 2021 and discard those dated 2020 or older. This should prevent any germination issues.
This is a fun activity to do in the dead of Winter. Looking forward to warmer weather and gardening can lift your spirits for sure. It’s hard to imagine that anything will grow outside when the snow covers everything and the temperatures dip below zero.
I recently wrote about receiving seed catalogs and reviewed the Seeds ‘N Such catalog. I have also received catalogs from Harris Seeds and Jung Seed and will write about them soon.
It’s an exciting time of the year for gardeners, even though no gardening will be done for months to come. Unless you start seeds or perhaps grow herbs indoors. But the planning and anticipation are fun. Winter gives us time to reflect on the past growing season and look forward to the next.
Arctic Blast
As I write this we are in for another blast of cold air starting tonight and lasting a few days. In fact, the next few weeks are supposed to feature below-average temperatures. Maybe some more snow also. Yesterday I was able to cross-country ski in the fresh snow (8 to 9 inches) we received Monday. It was fun since for my first two outings there was barely enough.
