My 1st 7 Day Challenge Completed
I researched and wrote about Medium every day for a week
Late September I decided to start writing more frequently as a hobby-goal. I started off with a simple goal of at least 1 post a week.
I was struggling a bit at first, especially with getting views outside of any of my friends that I was starting to harass. This naturally started leading me to reading up on other writers’ success methods and how to improve my own writing on the platform.
And I did get results. For the month of October, I gained 680 new followers and $33 in earnings. A small number but one that I’m very satisfied with.
I also was able to post about 20+ stories by the end of the month, something that surprised even myself.
Reading up on Medium
All the reading about Medium itself, led me to start wanting to post on the subject. So I thought to myself, why not try a 7 day challenge to write once a day about an aspect of Medium?
And I did, and I’m happy I did.
Not only did my daily reads improve, but it helped me realize why I was in T.S. Johnson’s ‘curation jail.’
I’m still in there too! But at least now I know why I am and how I got there originally.
The challenge itself also helped me greatly improve my writing — at least according to the style that is acceptable on Medium. The quality of my actual content might still be in need of improvement, but that’s what practice is for, right?
What did I learn outside of Medium itself?
I learned that writing daily can be addictive. This is both a good thing and a bad thing for me. I started spending a bit too much time every day focusing on writing as a hobby to the expense of some of my other goals.
So I know now that I have to keep the writing hobby on here as a time slot each day, and be careful to follow that strictly.
I also started delving into what makes authors on this platform actually successful, and it inspired me to strive on.
Lastly, writing every day for 7 days is a good goal to have, but I believe 7 days is a bit too much. Not only was the subject becoming a bit beating a dead horse after a few days, but I then needed to research way more to dive down into more specific aspects — time that I probably should’ve been using for other endeavors.
So what’s next?
I’m going to keep doing writing challenges, but keep it to 5 days as a maximum for now.
It’s a great way to learn more about a new subject, and also help other newbies to the subjects learn from my research.
I’ve come up with a list of a few other 5 day challenges that I’d like to explore, if anyone else has any fun ideas on this please reply below!
- Weird country origin stories
