8 Annoying Things I Wish Medium Would Fix Before ‘Fixing’ Payments
I believe Medium should fix a few things before spending all their effort on a new payment algorithm
Drum roll please — here goes another shameless Medium post! I’ll keep this one simple and straight to the point in the hopes that some day an ever so angelic product manager from Medium might take a peak.
Please highlight if you agree with any of the below major pet peeves that I have with using Medium.
Pretty Picky Pet Peeve Poll:
- The multiple screens for everything — If I see a response to a post, it opens a new screen. To then reply to that response. It opens a new screen. Can I read the original post by scrolling up or even the response? Nope, I open a new additional screen.
- The notifications button refreshes randomly. I’ve logged in several times to the app, excited to see the little numbers on top of the icon, only to click the notifications button and see absolutely nothing new. What is that?
- The “‘Name Name’ + 10 others started following you” numbers are annoyingly deceiving and also seem somewhat random. Same story, I’ll login, click the notifications excitedly, then see 5, 10, 15 etc, only to click on my profile and notice its only actually 1 extra follower. Are you trolling us Medium?
- ‘Published Stories’ tab — Why on earth are responses mixed in with my published stories? I know Medium wanted to be cheeky in their mantra and state every comment is also a story, but come on, mix some damn realism in with the mantra sometimes. Its incredibly ineffective to organize like that. Which brings me to —
- A lack of a highlights or responses tab in the ‘Stories’ section. If you’re going to go down that road of calling every interaction on Medium a ‘story’, at least let me separate it from the other types of posts for easy viewing and management. Either that, or leave the comments/replies only in the ‘Profile’ page.
- A lack of reader-perspective highlights or responses tabs. If you go on your ‘Profile’ page, you can see who you’ve clapped for and what you’ve highlighted. I’d like to see what other people have highlighted or clapped or replied of my work so that I can better interact with them! I’ve stated it before, Medium really feels like a one-way communication website to me.
- The Unsplash applet constantly malfunctions! — How many times have you tried entering a search and it kicks you out and puts your cursor beside the title? (Side note: it just did this again while writing this article) Or the other nice quirk I’ve experienced this week where you finally find that right picture, click it, it pops up, and then an error comes up saying it can’t be used without an explanation. Its also annoying that the applet keeps your previous search filled out in the bar. I’m picky dammit!
- Following people — I’ve experienced this more so on the Medium app but also sometimes on the browser version as well. Clicking follow on someone and it then unfollows them a few seconds later. I’m not referring to when I’ve hit the daily cap either, as I can go on later to follow others and that same person again. It’s just a random bug of unclicking my clicked click. For clicks sakes!
Caveat!
Now in case I screwed up above and listed a problem that isn’t really a problem, or there’s an easy workaround that I’m just too stupid to realize, please point out below in the replies! (And feel free to make fun of me in the process!)
Rant over.
As part of a meaningless personal challenge, I’m spending the next 7 days with my Captain Douchebag Product Manager hat on and critiquing different parts of the Medium platform.
If you feel like being cynical, here’s the article from Day 1:
