Monday Mash-Up #32
Story writing prompts to spark your creativity
Well, Kraken Crew, another two weeks has blown by like a speeding bullet train!
I hope you’re all staying healthy and writing!
In the first half of September, I *may* have shamelessly plugged my own birthday in the hopes of garnering praise. It was selfish of me and I humbly apologize.
For the second half of September, I thought it’d be fun to shoutout my awesome mother Jenny Sawyer. Don’t bother following her, she doesn’t write anything here on Medium. She won’t even read my awesome stories! But she does turn another year older on the 21st, and I like to remind her of every grain of sand slipping through that hourglass! Cuz I’m such a good boy!
Love ya, Mom! ❤
Highlights of Past Contributions:
Let’s start with this rebel — Bradan Writes Stories, who weaves a tearful, emotional tale that blows past the MMU word-limit like it was a Smokey and Bradan was the Bandit! A Must-read! 14 points!
H.R. Parker spins a tale of the Cybermancer and why you shouldn’t just drink his freely-offered beverages — even if he gives you 14 points!
“I came for the cake” are probably going to be my last words, if Andrew Crocker has any say in it. This twisted tale gets a totally-not-deadly 15/14 points. I can’t argue because I’m already dead, if the image of that delicious cake is any indication.
Aria Wraithe weighed in for this undead Mash-Up with a banquet worth at least 14 points (maybe more if you’re still alive afterwards!)
JF Danskin wrote an exciting tale recounting the storied prominence of a fabled bow and sniped 14 points!
Satire Superstar Jay C Wells gives an honest and truthful telling about giants and their larger-than-life relationship issues for 14 court-mandated points!
A debut mashup by E.A. Colquitt navigates around some impromptu couples counseling and Individual Flavoring for a delicious 12 points! Great work!
Finally, I can check Rayne Sanning off of my list with a brilliant and heartfelt origin story about a soul worth a shiny 15/14 points!
And last — but hopefully not least — Jonathon Sawyer returns with a sequel to his latest mashup for 13 points. His failure knows no bounds, but will Gilda find a win?
Phew! I think that’s all of them! If you submitted a response to this challenge, thank you! They were all great! If you didn’t, then what are you waiting for, cake?
Main Theme (Worth 2 points, flip a coin or choose one!):
Prompt #1:
Your protagonist becomes the head of ‘The Family’!
Do their parents have a tragic ending like Batman’s? Maybe you eliminated everyone to get to the top like some mobster? Maybe you were just the only one left for the job! And what, if anything, is so special about this family?
Prompt #2:
An old enemy has returned!
This may be a great opportunity to link to a past story you may have written! Who is this old enemy and what will it mean?
Constraints: Worth 1 point each (Choose 4 or roll 4 6-sided dice):
- A baseball bat
- Tons of confetti!
- A calendar with days “X”ed out
- An improvised weapon
- Your guess at my mom’s age! (Hint: I’m 37)
- A leather object
Hardcore Constraint: Worth 2 points (Flip a coin or choose one):
- Introduce (or reintroduce) a character who suffers from being permanently deaf, blind, or mute.
- An innocuous box that, if opened… EXPLODES!!!
Literary Device: Worth 5 points:
- Outline a classic “Hero’s Journey” that may or may not get completed.
Rules:
- Write a story based on one of the main prompts, including as many of the constraints in your story as possible.
- Word limit is temporarily removed. (Please don’t make me regret this! 🫠)
- Use the tag “Mashups” so we can easily find your story.
- Tag me Jonathon Sawyer because I love a full inbox! I will also highlight your stories in the next Mash-Up!
- Publish wherever you want but consider The Kraken Lore.
- Challenge your favorite hero to this Mash-Up or a future one! I challenge Subhi Najar, Captain Obvious and Rayne Sanning to write a response to this or the next Mash-Up!
- Add a section that tallies up your points (your score/14) at the end of your story. (Worth 1 point)
Get Kraken and see you in 2 weeks!
