AUTHOR TOOLS | MASH-UP

Monday Mash-Up #26

Story writing prompts to spark your creativity with a challenge

Beware the bewitching fey of the woods! | Image created by Author using NightCafé AI

Kraken Crew! Welcome back to another Monday Mash-Up! I hope dear Bradan has taken good care of things in my absence (aside from locking me out of my own place! 😫)

This Mash-Up prompt set focuses on the charming and bewitching nature of magic. Anybody remember Koriya from The Hero of Pendown?

Highlights of Past Contributions:

Not all Mashups stick around in the Kraken Lore. I wanted to highlight a handful of faithful Mashups that are part of a continuing saga, whether in TKL or elsewhere.

Always several Mash-Ups behind because he’s got so much on his plate, check out The Night Bunny’s series following a man and his centaur in Tantalizing Tales.

Jay C Wells continues his thrilling saga.

FJCMontenegro decided to flaunt the rules and create a series of stories for the Seedling Challenge.

Bradan Writes Stories presents an oldie but a goodie.

Main Theme (Worth 2 points; everybody gets the same prompt this time!)

Prompt #1:

Your hero is being tempted by a magical influence!

Who or what is trying to sway your hero? The One Ring? What are they being suggested to say or do?

Constraints: Worth 1 point each (Choose 4 or roll 4 6-sided dice):

  • A hungry bear (or a bugbear!)
  • A peculiar pet
  • Racing stripes (they make it look like you’re going faster!)
  • A canoe
  • A glowing object (that probably shouldn’t be glowing!)
  • Three matches
  • A half-eaten cake
  • A fire that just won’t go out!

Hardcore Constraint: The BBEG (Big, Bad, Evil Guy/Gal) Worth 2 points (Flip a coin or choose one):

  • An evil wizard, witch, or warlock
  • An enchanted animal that can now speak!

Literary Device: Worth 5 points (Flip a coin or choose one):

Rules:

  1. Write a story based on the main prompt.
  2. Include as many of the constraints in your story as possible.
  3. Keep your story between 100–1000 words.
  4. Use the tag “Mashups” so we can easily find your story.
  5. Tag Jonathon Sawyer and Bradan Writes Stories because we love a full inbox! We can also highlight your stories in the next Mash-Up!
  6. Challenge your fellow writers! I challenge Andrew Crocker, and Bradan Writes Stories to contribute! I hope you’ll also consider the Seedling Challenge too!
  7. Publish wherever you want but consider The Kraken Lore.
  8. Add a section that tallies up your points at the end of your story. You can look here for an example. (Worth 1 BONUS point)
