AUTHOR TOOLS | MASH-UP

Monday Mash-Up #16

Story writing prompts to spark your creativity with a challenge

Image created by Author using Nightcafé AI

Welcome back, Kraken Crew! Seems like I was just here, pondering over the twins-themed set of prompts, when I realized that time had total control over our lives.

It’s time to take that control back!

Tally of the points earned thus far: (Mash-Up #12–15)

First place: Currently tied are Bradan Writes Stories and JF Danskin with 42 points!

Second place: Rayne Sanning hot in pursuit with 41 points!

Third Place: Sonja Glucksberg sliding in behind them with 40 points!

Honorable Mentions: Jonathon Sawyer with 28 points; YM Seah with 23 points; Jay C Wells and Kathy K with 14 points; Diana Thorland with 11 points!

Please take some time to give all of these amazing authors a quick read! And thank you to all participants, past and present!

Time is running out, so no lame jokes or anecdotes — onto the prompts!

Prompt #1 (2 points):

Someone is controlling the flow of time, faster, slower, forwards, back

Perhaps with a television remote control? Too original? Anyways, is the Time Controller a good actor, or do they change time for more nefarious purposes? Maybe it’s a toddler mashing buttons!

Prompt #2 (2 points):

Just as you are about to die, time stops

Maybe you have death-defying superpowers, or something even more mysterious — control over time itself! Maybe you were about to be run over by “Truck-kun” or fall from a great height.

Constraints: (Worth 1 bonus point each)

  • A truck (you know I had to!)
  • A balcony
  • The sound of falling rain
  • Acorns

Hardcore Constraint: (Worth 2 bonus points)

  • A grandfather clock

Literary Device: (Worth a MEGA 5 bonus points!)

Rules:

  1. Write a story based on one of the two main prompts.
  2. Include as many of the constraints in your story as possible.
  3. Use the tag “Mashups”. This is the easiest way for our editors to find you to score your submission!
  4. Keep your story between 100–1000 words.
  5. Tag me @ Sawyer . Jon (no spaces) Jonathon Sawyer so that I can read it and credit you for points in the next Mash-Up, please!
  6. Challenge your fellow writers. I challenge Diana Thorland (She knows why) and Lauren Salas to contribute a story!
  7. Publish where ever you want but consider The Kraken Lore.
  8. Add a section that tallies up your points at the end of your story. (Worth 1 BONUS point)
