FICTION | FANTASY | WOLF-GIRLS

David Hawke and the Full Moon Murder

A continuation of the documentary that the world will never see.

Okiba, clan leader — Generated by author with Midjourney

“What have you done!” Okiba the wolf girl clan leader yelled, her face had quickly turned several shades of red with rage.

“I wanted to be more like you,” David said innocently. His newly acquired wolf ears laid back against his head.

“Were you even thinking?” Okiba groaned. “No. You weren’t!” she cut David off before he could answer her question.

“I got a second opinion…” David trailed off while watching a fat pigeon fly into the distance. “Maybe you could untie me now?” he pulled at the ropes.

Okiba snarled and began to speak before she was cut off by Aiya. She had arrived in her wolf form and shifted into a human. “The clan is under attack,” she panted out of breath.

“Under attack?” Okiba said taken aback, “By who?”

“The humans,” Aiya said and offered a death glare to David.

David’s eyes went wide. Without contact with the rest of his team, they would suspect the worst and send a rescue squad for him. They likely tracked his last known GPS location and following the wolf tracks would be an easy enough task for them.

“You have to set me free!” David pleaded and tugged at the ropes.

“So you can betray us again?” Okiba growled, and her features became more fearsome and wolf-like. “It’s your fault the humans are here in the first place.”

“Okiba!” Aiya snapped, “We have to go!”

A gunshot rang out and echoed across the land. Its boom left an eerie silence that sent chills down David’s spine. He imploringly at Okiba, “I know you don’t trust me, I wouldn’t either, but you have to let me go. Let me set things right.”

“No, you’ve done enough…” Okiba turned her back to David. She, and Aiya, shifted back into their wolf forms and sprinted through the snow to head toward their village as another gunshot rang out.

“Dammit,” David cursed under his breath. Somehow he had only made the situation worse. He slowly thumped the back of his head against the tree in frustration. He closed his eyes for several moments while he tried to formulate a plan.

When he finally reopened his eyes David noticed a full moon in the sky. He felt captivated by its presence. Through some supernatural bond, it was as if the moon tried to help by offering him encouragement and renewed strength. His days of starvation and exhaustion were shed from his shoulders like a heavy coat.

David pulled at the ropes one last time. He could hear the individual strands snap with amazing clarity. Seconds later he stared back at the tree he was bound to for so long. He was finally free.

With amazing speed, he raced across the snow-covered forest and darted between the trees. He could easily pick up Okiba and Aiya’s scent, a sweet aroma he had not noticed until now. He used a fallen tree as a makeshift bridge to cross the ravine. He couldn’t help but think of it as a drawbridge for a castle moat.

David slid to a stop as his heart leaped into his throat. Okiba, illuminated by the moonlight, stood frozen in fear. A member of the rescue squad stood with his gun raised and pointed at her, a broken 2x4 in his offhand.

“Don’t shoot!” David yelled. He sprinted for the duo as quickly as his legs would carry him. His lungs began to burn from the cold air he sucked in, but he was too late…
