Monday Mash-Up #14

Story writing prompts to spark your creativity with a challenge

Randomly generated image by Nightcafé

The holiday season is upon us, and I’d once again like to extend my best wishes to friends and family (and respected sea monsters) during what can sometimes be a challenging time of the year.

These two weeks have zoomed by for me! Let’s see what our talented Mashup Writers have been up to!

Tally of the points earned thus far: (Mash-Up #12 & 13)

1st place: JF Danskin and Bradan Writes Stories with a perfect 28 points!

2nd place: Sonja Glucksberg with a spicy 26 points!

3rd place: YM Seah with an adorable 23 points!

Honorable Mentions: Jay C Wells, Rayne Sanning and Jonathon Sawyer with 14 points; Diana Thorland with 11 points!

I left all the points on the window ledge to cool off, and a pigeon flew off with them!

Now, on to the final Mashup of the Year!

Prompt #1 (2 points):

You or someone you love is locked up in the tower.

What are the circumstances that have led to this predicament? What happens next?

Prompt #2 (2 points):

An aide rushes in to inform the King or Queen that the castle is under siege!

Besides being an amusing yet mediocre film by Steven Seagal, what will it mean to be “Under Siege”?

Constraints: (Worth 1 bonus point each)

  • A 2 x 4
  • A full moon
  • A second-opinion
  • A color describes a character’s emotion (green with envy, red with rage)

Hardcore Constraint: (Worth 2 bonus points)

  • A castle uses something bizarre in place of a traditional “drawbridge” over their moat…

Literary Device: (Worth a MEGA 5 bonus points!)

Rules: 1. Write a story based on one of the two main prompts. 2. Include as many of the constraints in your story as possible. 3. Use the tag “Mashups”. This is the easiest way for our editors to find you to score your submission! 4. Keep your story between 100–1000 words. 5. Tag me @ Sawyer . Jon (no spaces) Jonathon Sawyer so that I can read it and credit you for points in the next Mash-Up, please! 6. Challenge your fellow writers. I challenge Jim McDonald to Mashup #14! 7. Publish where ever you want but consider The Kraken Lore. 8. Add a section that tallies up your points at the end of your story using CTRL+ALT+6 or hit the ` key 3 times (```) on a new line. You can look here for instructions. Also, I have written a Template for you as an example here. (Worth 1 BONUS point)
