Summary

Midjourney V6 has introduced a new feature called "Style References" to create unique AI images using consistent styles.

Abstract

The article discusses the latest update from Midjourney V6, which introduces a new feature called "Style References" that allows users to create unique AI images with consistent styles. This feature works by using a URL to an image as a "style reference" and applying it to the generated image. The article provides a step-by-step guide on how to use Style References, including advanced settings for multiple URLs and relative weights of styles. The article also notes that the feature is currently in alpha and may change in the coming weeks.

Bullet points

  • Midjourney V6 has introduced a new feature called "Style References" to create unique AI images using consistent styles.
  • To use Style References, users must type --sref along with a URL to an image after their prompt.
  • Our system will look at the image URL as a 'style reference' and try to make something that 'matches' its style or aesthetic.
  • Style References work for both V6 and Niji V6 (it does not work with V5 etc).
  • Advanced settings include using multiple URLs to multiple images and setting relative weights of styles.
  • The total strength of the stylization can be set via --sw 100 (100 is default, 0 is off, 1000 is maximum).
  • Regular image prompts must go before --sref.
  • The feature is currently in alpha and may change in the coming weeks.
  • If a prompt tends towards photorealism and a conflicting style like illustration is desired, users may still need to add some text to their prompt saying so.
  • Style References have no direct effect on image prompts, only on jobs that contain at least one text prompt.
  • A "Consistent Character" feature will be added at a later date that works the same with a --cref argument.

Midjourney V6 Style References are here — and they are amazing!

David Holz announced on Midjourney’s Discord server:

“Hey @everyone, we’re releasing our first test algorithms for ‘Consistent Styles’ today. We’re calling the feature “Style References”. They work similarly to image prompts where you give a URL to one or more images that ‘describe’ the consistent style you want to work over.

How to use Style References

  • After your prompt type --sref along with a URL to an image --sref urlA
  • Our system will look at the image URL as a ‘style references’ and try to make something that ‘matches’ its style or aesthetic
  • This works for both V6 and Niji V6 (it does not work with V5 etc)

Advanced Settings

  • Use multiple URLs to multiple images like this --sref urlA urlB urlC
  • Set relative weights of styles like this --sref urlA::2 urlB::3 urlC::5
  • Set the total strength of the stylization via --sw 100 (100 is default, 0 is off, 1000 is maximum)
  • Regular image prompts must go before --sref like this/imagine cat ninja ImagePrompt1 ImagePrompt2 --sref stylePrompt1 stylePrompt2

Please Note:

  • We’ll likely update this in the next few weeks (and it may change things, so be careful while it’s all in alpha).
  • If your prompt tends towards photorealism and you want a conflicting style like illustration, you may still need to add some text to your prompt saying so
  • Style References have no direct effect on image prompts, only on jobs that contain at least one text prompt
  • Our plan will be to add a “Consistent Character” feature at later date that works the same with a --cref argument.

Please play around with this totally new algorithm and share results in #sref-showcase and tell us what you think #in ideas-and-features.”

Let’s test Midjourney’s new Style Reference!

I am excited to test it out with reference images from my own blog article about Midjourney Styles in MJ V5.2.

I will take this simple prompt and test it with different reference images:

This prompt without a style will give you images like this:
