Medium Vs Vocal Media: A Comparison of Both Writing Platforms
An in-detail comparison and difference between Medium And Vocal Media.
I am a writer on Medium as well as Vocal Media. Medium.com was the first platform that I have discovered along the way, & I fell in love with this platform. A platform that gives you an opportunity to share your thoughts and also give you a chance to make money from your content, it was just Medium.com for me. I am really grateful to EV William who created this platform. Writing on Medium for me is a fun time sharing my thoughts.
I even write complete guides like “How to make money writing?” and “How can you make money writing on Medium?”
Vocal Media is another platform with a very similar business model to Medium but in a completely different way.
The Business Model of Medium Vs Vocal:
The business model of Medium is very simple. Medium Membership costs $5/month and you get the opportunity to read unlimited articles on Medium for a month. If you are a Medium member, then some portion of your $5 will goes to the writer who you read articles. Out of $5 you invest in Medium, some portion goes to Medium. This is how Medium makes money.
Vocal Media is owned by a public limited company called Jerrick Media, Jerrick Media invested a lot of money into the online publishing business. Their main idea is to create a platform where creators can share content. Vocal Media business model is subscription-based but you can read articles on Vocal for free and you don’t need any subscription.
The Subscription cost:
- Medium.com subscription costs $5/month or $50/year. Getting a Medium membership means that you can read unlimited articles for a month or year. If you are serious about Medium and interact with like-minded writers, getting a Medium membership is definitely worth it.
- Vocal costs $9.99/month but this is only good for content creators on Vocal. You don’t need any subscription if you want to read articles on Vocal but if you are a content creator on Vocal and want to make more money then I will definitely recommend Vocal+ which costs $9.99/month. Some perks of being a Vocal+ member is that you make $6/1,000 views compared to a non-vocal+ member of $3.8/1,000 views.
How do creators make money on Vocal and Medium?
Content Creators on Medium makes money through joining the Medium partner program and then write articles, writers get paid based on the Medium member read time. Here are some articles that will clear your doubts about how creators are making money on Medium? How much Medium pay per 1,000 minutes of reading time? and Is the Medium partner program worth it?
Vocal has a very simple model to pay its creators. You get more views, you make more money. Vocal pay for Views. The source of the views doesn’t matter. The only thing that Vocal needs are real human readers.
User Interference:
The user interference of Medium is way better than Vocal. Vocal has no built-in traffic because of weird user interference. They have categorized everything and combined two topics. The platform is new so maybe with time it grows and accumulates more viewers and has better functionality.
The Embedding feature:
On Medium you can embed links, videos, email sign-up forms, Google Forms, and podcasts. You can find the complete list of embeds here. I have embedded links on Medium as well as Vocal and in my view, Medium embeds look way better than the embedded link on Vocal Media.
There is no way to compare both the platforms as one is very much interested to build a community of creators while the other platform (Vocal) is trying hard to let creators create more content and opt for the search traffic.
Publishing on Medium Vs Vocal:
Vocal has problems with the Technical side as the site doesn’t allow you to write articles on Mobile and also has no app where you could publish content. When you write an article on Vocal, you have to submit it for human review. A moderator of Vocal will review your article and will accept or reject it based on their submission guidelines. One of my stories get curated on Vocal and it didn’t get more views as expected.
Publishing on Medium is easy. You write an article, do all the SEO stuff, and your work will be live in just a matter of a second. Easy passe. You can submit your article to a Medium publication and your article will be reached by hundreds of people.
The Community feature on Vocal And Medium:
- Vocal has no community. There is no follow button, there are Vocal publications but you can’t follow them. The feed system is broken. I know this seems very critical even though I am a writer on Vocal and making over $200/month writing on Vocal but I think I have the responsibility to present the facts.
- On Medium, there is a strong community. People who pay to read articles, visit the site at least once to read content from their favorite writers, and about their favorite topic.
Medium is a winner here.
Syndication content on Medium:
Vocal only accepts content that isn’t published somewhere else while Medium has a full-pledge system for content writers to syndicate content on Medium. I wrote a story about importing articles to Medium the right way.
PS: A comparison between Vocal and Medium:
Vocal Media is a great platform, it has some short-comings but a good platform to make money writing. It doesn’t cost anything and you just share your thoughts. There are some writers who are making $2K a month writing on Vocal.
Medium is a fairly a more successful and a right platform for writers. Last month, the top-earner on Medium makes over $49000. Medium is a far greater platform than Vocal but as someone once said;
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
