Medium Partner Program Monthly Wrap-Up (Month 6)

43 articles written and some exciting news!

This is the last monthly report that I will write of my first 6 months in the Medium Partner Program.

It seems impossible to me that another month has slipped by again. But here we are in September already!

Although August seemed to go fast, it also seemed to crawl by. Much of that was to do, I think, with the lack of engagement that I received on my articles in August. I have heard from numerous other writers that August was also a terrible month for them. I’m not sure if it is just the summer season that has caused it or the changes to the Medium platform. But whatever it is, I hope it sorts itself out soon!

This article is a bit of a celebration as it is my 300th article!

I wrote 43 articles in August which I am happy with. At times I felt like I was doing too much, but other times I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. But it seems that writing 40–45 articles in a month is about my comfortable norm. I still have 98 drafts on the go, so I will never run out of things to write about I don’t think.

Much of my income this month came towards the end of the month after I wrote: “I Refuse To Write About Negative Things Even Though That Is What Makes Money.” I was feeling melancholy about my writing and was starting to question my content and how I could get more engagement moving forward. I noticed that negative writing brought in the money, but I didn’t want to do that. When I sat down to write that day, the above story came pouring out, and I have been pleased with the results. In fact, it is my highest earner in August.

What do you know? Positivity does sell!

I wrote a follow-up post about what I learned in the process as well. It has been an enlightening experience and I am so grateful for all of the positive reinforcement that I received in response to both articles. Thank you so much to all who read, clapped, and commented!

Two exciting things happened for me in August!

Number one, I started another publication! This time it is about sharing food that is different and unique from cultures and countries around the world. I have been thrilled with the response to the publication and have had numerous writers signing up and a few articles have come in as well.

I really enjoy sharing the foods that we encounter as we travel, plus I am thrilled with learning about other foods that are specific to different parts of the world. I look forward to continued growth there.

If you want to write about food, let me know in the comments and I will add you as a writer!

Number two, I was asked to join the editing team at the Globetrotters publication!

I have been watching with keen interest as Globetrotters has grown over the past few months. As travel is my life these days, I am constantly inspired and intrigued by the articles that are submitted. Becoming an editor is the pinnacle of my Medium career so far, and I am honored and over the moon about this opportunity. I really look forward to witnessing the publication grow and change as we move into the future.

I was thrilled to write the monthly writing prompt for September “The Harvest and The Food” as my first official post as editor.

My other publication Share Your Creativity is still growing as well. We now have 65 followers and a whole slew of writers. I look forward to sharing the next monthly wrap-up for that soon.

About the numbers.

This month, instead of listing the articles that I wrote, I’m just going to cut to the chase and get into the stats. As mentioned above I wrote 43 articles and I gained 213 new followers bringing my total to 1493. So close to 1500!

In August my views and claps were up, but my reads were down. Go figure. I will never figure out how Medium figures all of this stuff out, but that’s okay. I am just coming along for the ride. As you can see, I celebrated a spike in my views mid-month. Unfortunately, those are external views, so they aren’t monetized, but it’s still nice to see my content go out into the ether being read by many people.

This is the one that caused the jump. 1.1k views, 135 reads and 17 claps. Despite the excitement, it only earned $3.44 for internal views.

This month my total earnings including referrals is $111.07. While my earnings are down slightly from July, I’m still happy to be part of the $100 club and know that with the fall and winter approaching, the season of readers is coming.

Here are my top earners in August. As I mentioned before, my refusal to write about negativity paid off and made me a bit of money in the end. I’m also happy that my Ugandan road trip story did so well. I will link these stories below if you are interested in reading them.

My travelling life

In August our travels brought us to Turkey after spending most of the past two years in Africa. We have welcomed the change of pace and the more modern luxuries that come with living in a city like Istanbul, like good wifi, for example.

We really love Istanbul and I have written a lot about our time here. I have put all of my Turkey articles into a list. Soon we are heading up to Bulgaria and we look forward to the adventures that await us there.

I also continue to write a weekly wrap-up for my patrons on Patreon, plus one here on Medium most Wednesdays.

Thank you so much to all of you who continue to read, clap and comment on my stories. The longer I am on this platform, the more in love with it I become.

The community that we are building here is inspiring and uplifting and I will never tire of reading about other people's stories of life.

Hope everyone is enjoying the end of the season! I myself look forward to witnessing my first fall in a few years.

Much love from Istanbul,

xo Jill
