Medium Launched ‘Blogrolls.’ Activate Now!

What is it and how can you activate this new feature?

A few days ago, in a post published in the official Medium blog 3 Min Read, Sam Jayne mentioned that Medium already launched a new feature: Blogrolls.

Sam says it is a part of Ev William’s plan that he stated in a post published on 29 August 2020. Ev wrote —

“Discovering new writers and publications will always be important, so we will continue to help readers serendipitously find stories they wouldn’t have otherwise, through machine- and human-driven recommendations.”

Anyway, Medium is constantly changing, and to keep up with the changes, you must know what’s going on here.

What Is Blogroll?

A blogroll is a list of other blogs placed in the sidebar of your blog page or profile page. On Medium, it is a set of recommendations for you generally based on your reading and following preferences.

Sam mentions, “Blogrolls will automatically show writers you follow, sorted by who has most recently published.”

Let’s see how it looks like to understand it better.

See the left side of my profile page (inside the red box). There is a list of publications I follow that appeared as a blogroll.

You will see blogrolls on writers’ profile sidebars, beneath their bios on their profiles and story pages.

How It Can Help You

Sam says it will make you visible to readers in a completely new way, allowing you to easily navigate to more related content. He mentions two ways —

1. Blogrolls will help you gain new readers
2. They will connect you with your community.

Medium considers it a fluid and organic way to find the related content and engage with the writers.

How to Activate Your Blogroll?

The blogroll will only appear when you activate it, going to your design editor. Here is the process —

1. Go to “Design your profile”
2. See “Blogroll” on the left side (below Header)
3. Tick the “Show blogroll” box

To Conclude

Medium believes that this feature will connect readers and writers in more visible and meaningful ways.

I think it’s an excellent initiative that will enhance readers-writers engagement. And I hope this feature will be better and better with time and help create a vibrant blogging environment.
