Summary

The undefined website presents a writing challenge for May, inviting writers to share personal narratives about their encounters with ancient and prehistoric ruins around the world.

Abstract

The Globetrotters Writing Prompt for May encourages writers to explore the theme "Ruins of the World," focusing on their experiences with ancient structures, traditional homes, and historical sites that have withstood the test of time. Participants are encouraged to submit stories of their travels to places rich in history, such as Roman cobblestone streets, fortified walls, pyramids, and temples of ancient civilizations. The challenge emphasizes the importance of historical exploration and personal connection to the past, asking writers to be creative and compelling in their storytelling. Submissions must tag two related articles from the publication, adhere to specific guidelines, and be submitted between May 1st and May 30th. The editors, JoAnn, Adrienne, Jillian, Michele, and Anne, will review the entries and announce the winners, while also contributing their own non-competing pieces.

Opinions

  • The author expresses a sense of wonder at the resilience of ancient structures, contrasting them with modern buildings that may not withstand natural disasters as effectively.
  • There is a suggestion that visiting well-known ruins like the Pyramids of Giza or Machu Picchu might be marred by large crowds, potentially diminishing the experience.
  • The author shows a preference for exploring lesser-known, remote ruins that may offer a more authentic and intimate connection to history.
  • The article implies that traveling with the purpose of discovering historical monuments is a rewarding experience, though serendipitous encounters with ruins

May Monthly Challenge — Ruins of the World

We want to hear about ancient and prehistoric ruins or whatever else you found

While we are at the highest any society on Earth has ever stood, we build homes that barely withstand a storm and crumble down after every earthquake. We try to become better while ignoring often our past.

Traveling the world has brought me to the most diverse societies and cultures and a lot of ancient structures and traditional homes can still be found standing. Not just after a tragic weather event.

No, some of these ruins have withstood all wars ever recorded and lasted for thousands of years. Prehistoric caves are still inhabitable today. Some at least.

I stood in front of a Roman temple in Portugal and visited countless fortified churches and castles in Romania. I explored the country of Malta where over 5000 years ago already high-developed civilizations existed on the Mediterranean islands. All these places surprised me with the load of history I could find.

There are other ruins such as the Pyramids of Giza or the temples of Machu Picchu I haven’t even gotten close to. But are they really worth a visit or do the human crowds ruin the experience of these historic ruins?

Have you ever been to any of these or do you prefer to find smaller and more remote ruins in forgotten rural areas?

While our previous challenge was asking for the beauty of our planet and making us search for flowers around the world, this time we ask you to do some time traveling.

Ruins of the World.

We’d love to hear where you encountered some ancient history. Where did you walk on Roman cobblestone streets or passed fortified stone walls? Did you visit pyramids on one or the other side of the world or did you explore the historic temples of the Aztecs or Mayan society?

Please send us your drafts. We’re looking for some personal narratives inspired by the unique stories of your travels into the past.

We would like to hear when and where you traveled and stumbled upon ruins. Was a trip dedicated to a historic monument or did you happen to stumble by accident upon the ruins?

We want to hear about when you got transported into the past and where you walked along Roman stonewalls or stumbled upon prehistoric caves.

Be creative.

Pull us in with your compelling narrative.
