Machines — 3

Emotional Intelligence, Consciousness, Soul, & Sentience

In this series of blogs, we will begin with a basic understanding of what machines are, and then move on to understand what the terms Emotional Intelligence, consciousness, soul, and sentience mean, when it comes to machines.

(Please read Machines — 1 and 2, on EI and Consciousness, before or after, you read this blog).

So, let us jump straight in, and try to tackle the third of these complex issues — Soul.

Soul has long been perceived as the spark of metaphysical consciousness that separates living from non-living beings.

Unlike emotional-intelligence and sentience, soul has less to do with science and more to do with spiritual beliefs and is difficult to define and understand.

when it comes to machines, the concept of soul does not apply in the same way as living beings. Machines do not possess any souls or any other metaphysical properties. They are non-biological physical objects that can perform a specific task based on inputs and programmed insstructions.

Although machines may not have souls, they do have the potential to change human lives and world views profoundly. This can easily been seen in Kazuo Ishiguro’s — Klara and the Sun, where an artificial friend is shown to have developed a character and a soul.

Machines and technology have already transformed the way in which humans interact with the world, and this trend will continue in the future. Machines will assist humans in several tasks, thereby expanding human capabilities.

However, it is essential to understand that machines are tools created by humans, and can not replace humans’ emotional abilities and responsibilities completely.

In the next blog Machines — 4, we will discuss about Sentience in machines.
