Lucky Bastards Play The Game
Luck is overrated
“She got so lucky”
Every successful person has probably heard this before.
“He was so lucky to be signed by this label. That’s the only reason he’s in the charts today.” says the hip hop fan at home on the couch with a bag of potato chips in his hand. He also dreamed of becoming a famous rapper, but he never really tried.
Being In The Right Place At The Right Time
Blaming the success of others on luck is a very bad mindset and shows that you will probably never be that successful yourself. If you think that becoming successful depends mainly on luck, you probably never will. I’m sorry.
- The most famous rappers of our time have certainly had a bit of luck. Maybe because they were signed by the right label.
- Maybe the most successful investors had a little luck with the stocks they invested in.
- Maybe someone was lucky to read about Bitcoin back in 2012.
- Maybe the most successful basketball players were probably a little lucky to have had good coaches in their youth and to have been drafted later by a good team where they got a chance to play.
Certainly, a little bit of luck is part of every great success story.
As they say, you have to be in the right place at the right time. What separates the mentioned successful people from those at home on the couch is that they are in the right place and only have to wait for the right time.
They rapped, they invested, and they played basketball. In doing so, they put themselves in a situation where luck could find them in the first place.
If you don’t even try it, which means you’re not even in the right place, even the right time won’t help you.
Lucky Bastards Play the game.
This is the title of a chapter of “The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco” and describes it perfectly.
Events vs. Processes
It took me 17 years and 114 days to become an overnight success — Lionel Messi
As an outside observer, you only see events that may look like luck. The signing of a contract with a big club or the sale of a company for many millions. These things are events. Of course, individual events can depend on luck.
But what you don’t see is the process that has to be gone through beforehand. The many hours of hard work make it possible to get into a situation where you can be lucky.
I think luck and overnight successes are overrated and constructs of those who are not willing to do the necessary work. Probably as a coping mechanism to feel better about themselves.
