Looking for Some Luck? Make Your Own

Here’s the key to creating your own luck…and it doesn’t involve finding a 4-leaf clover.

You often hear people comment about the work of a talented artist, musician, seamstress, orator, or CEO.’

“Oh, isn’t he lucky to have such a great gift? Isn’t he blessed?”

While a knack for doing something is indeed a talent or blessing, the fact that this skill or art is developed is not luck.

Talk to any Juilliard student and you will discover that this talented cello or violin player has put in thousands of hours honing his craft.

In just one sentence, the person making that statement (“Isn’t he lucky?”) has dispelled all of the hard work done by the other person to reach success.

Success is more than luck. In fact, we make our own luck.

We do so by being fearless, by daring to set high goals, and by working tirelessly to achieve those lofty aspirations.

An ESSENCE magazine interview with supermodel and entrepreneur Iman revealed the biggest risk she had ever taken was leaving Africa, which led to her becoming a model.

Iman said, “The people who are the most successful in life are not stopped by fear.”

Her leap of faith not only catapulted her to supermodel status but also led to the creation of a successful cosmetics line.

Before we can share our blessings with the world, we have to develop them. Success has little to do with luck and a lot to do with hard work.

Philosopher Lucius Anneas Seneca said, “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.”

Photographer Chris Grosser reminds us that “Opportunities don’t happen. You create them.”

Both of these messages remind us that we have to have the courage to take a stab at things, to risk moving out of our comfort level.

We have to be willing to do two things: go out on a limb and attempt what we have never tried and worked tirelessly toward the goals we have set for ourselves in developing our blessings.

According to Henry Ford, “The whole secret of a successful life is to find out what is one’s destiny to do, and then do it.”

Persevere, dare to succeed, and create your own luck!
