Leaving Kathmandu -Laughing at Goodbye Ceremonies and Fighting to get to the Airport
Namaste Nepal, Annyeonghaseyo Korea!
The school set up a rather comical goodbye ceremony for us. As it was so early in the morning before we left, it consisted only of the older students who lived on campus. This made me laugh because as I taught the youngers kids, I didn’t know a single one of these children elaborately saying goodbye to me. They all lined up to place a good luck tikka on my head. By that, I mean rub red powder ALL OVER my face. They really smooshed it in hard. I looked like I’d been the victim of some horrible crime. They were laughing their heads off at their handiwork. I was thinking “they might not let me on the plane looking like this! I might be carted off to the police instead for a statement!”
The night before we were due to fly, our friend told us that “there will be a strike tomorrow, there will be nobody driving on the roads, no taxis will take you to the airport and neither will the school driver.”
Oh, fantastic… “Erm, how far away is the airport?”
“You can walk there. It’s just over 2 hours”.
“Oh great….”
A 2 hour plus walk in the pitch black of the early morning across Kathmandu during a strike, with my heavy rucksack and tourist practically tattooed on my forehead. Sounds perfect.
Luckily, we didn’t have to walk there. The school driver eventually agreed to take us. We put a big sign on the car saying “tourists only” and brought our Chinese friend with us to play the “tourist” on the way back from the airport. We left super early in case of problems, but the journey that usually takes 45 mins to an hour in the car only took 5 minutes with no traffic, bonus! I quite like this strike after all!
Goodbye Nepal! There’s certainly never been a dull moment and you’re a place I will never forget!
