Karen’s Weekly Technology Hits Review

Welcome to this week’s technology review dear readers. Rahul Gopakumar posted a link to his impressive article in a comment on one of my stories. Cheeky, I thought at first. Then after a little more pondering, I decided it was an excellent idea that was perfect for this review.

In fact, Rahul convinced me to invest in solar panels and become a prosumer when I buy my retirement property this year. The more bills I can cut down on now will mean huge savings on outgoings. But, more importantly, harnessing sunshine to heat hot water and my home is better for the environment than fossil fuels and wood-burning which produce CO2.

Nature has forced the human species to rethink its way of living. This fact holds good for all our day-to-day activities like eating, shopping, travel, and recreation. COVID pandemic has made us re-think the way we wash our hands!

This next piece has an exceptionally good introduction. The quote is from a book. I certainly hadn’t thought of these well-known companies in the way the author, Rachel Botsman, has. Akarsh Nalawade shares trust issues and how they were overcome.

“Uber, the world’s largest taxi company, owns no vehicles. Facebook, the world’s most popular media owner, creates no content. Alibaba, the world’s most valuable retailer, has no inventory. And Airbnb, the world’s largest accommodation provider, owns no real estate. Something interesting is happening”. Rachel Botsman, Who Can You Trust?: How Technology Brought Us Together And Why It Might Drive Us Apart

My dad hero-worships Elon Musk. I’m beginning to feel the same way. Musk is not all about rockets though. His electric cars, 500% better batteries, and his satellite internet have and will transform markets as well as create a better world atmosphere.

For many students, the only internet access they had available was at school. As of September 2020, 3.7 million children still did not have access to an internet connection at home.

Spensa Rose brings us a fabulous experiment with coding. The results are well worth reaching by reading through the technicalities!

My favourites are the last two.

I fantasized about sea dragons and giant megalodons and who knows, maybe they do exist down there. But I wanted to take it a step further than just fantasizing about these creatures. As someone who is fascinated by the possibilities of computer science and AI, I decided it would be interesting to take a computational approach to hypothesize what these sea creatures might look like.

Landon Lester shares his knowledge of Algorand, a new blockchain cryptocurrency. He mentions ClimateTrade, an exchange that offers a carbon footprint offsetting service to businesses and which has partnered with Algorand. Sounds like a pro-environmental relationship to me.

I’ve admittedly been fascinated with some developments in blockchain and, specifically, the growing cryptocurrency space. Though only time will tell how this digital currency landscape will ultimately play out, and further still, how blockchain technology will ultimately change our lives.

Star Reads

Seeing a future that isn’t black and white but a full radiant palette of colours and a variety of natural shapes is Desiree Driesenaar’s view. She shares her wisdom with us.

Marriages are in my head all the time lately. Not the romantic kind of boy meets girl but the ones where humans meet nature. And nature meets humanity and they live happily ever after.

Trading stocks is something that has intrigued me for quite some time. Arthur G. Hernandez illuminated an app that cuts out all the fuss involved with day trading. Prepare to discover swing trading. Here’s his wisdom.

I don’t write a whole lot, but it looks like I may pull in about $10 for the first two months of 2021, writing on Medium. I would of course like to earn more, but I’ll take what I can get. Around the same time I started writing on Medium, I began trading stocks using the mobile app Robinhood.

Thank you for reading.
