John Mayer on why sober dating forces authenticity

Musician John Mayer has had a seemingly endless string of high-profile relationships — most of which ended badly.

Among the famous women he’s dated (this is not an exhaustive list) are Taylor Swift, Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry and Jennifer Aniston.

Since quitting drinking about six years ago, however, the 45-year-old is seeking deeper connections.

In an interview with the Call Her Daddy podcast, recapped by Entertainment Tonight here, Mayer talked about not having access to “liquid courage” on dates.

ET quotes him as saying:

“You have to be honest. You have to express yourself, you have to be really, glaringly honest.

“Here’s who I am, here’s what I like, here’s what makes me nervous. Here’s what I reject as an idea. You have to express your anxieties. You can’t just walk over them by drinking.

“You have to be like, ‘Here’s what I’m anxious about.’ When someone in life accommodates your anxiety, that’s bonding.”

Genuine relationships

Fortunately, it’s been a very long time since I’ve had to endure any kind of dating (I say fortunately because I’m super introverted), but I can say that I agree avoiding alcohol forces more authentic relationships — good or bad.

A lot of my past drinking was tied to being in social situations or being forced to spend time time with people I’d have rather avoided.

I’m a lot more cuttroat about that stuff now — I’ll simply avoid those situations altogether, even if it means being misconstrued as “rude” or “antisocial.”

Unfortunately, society is deeply unkind to introverts. If you don’t want to participate in certain things, you’re effectively shamed for it.

But at some point you have to put yourself first — especially if you’re trying to maintain sobriety and avoid triggers.

Navigating relationships can definitely be a bit more challenging without alcohol in the mix, but the good news is this: whatever social links you do choose to develop will actually be genuine.
