I’ve received over 1,000,000 views on Medium — Here’s what I’ve learned
I’ve been on Medium for over 5 years. But, in the last year, I’ve had the most traction and growth on my account.
I went from 100 followers to over 18,000 followers, grew my traffic to over 300,000 monthly views, made up to nearly $6K/month from the Medium Partner Program, and had multiple 100K+-viewed stories.
Here’s how I have received over one million views on Medium…
Garnering over one million views on Medium
I had a few big hits in the past year on Medium.
I wrote about them here:
What’s my secret?
I just write about what I love.
I tend to write about the same kind of content (the same niche) venturing outside my niche on occasion to cover topics that mean something to me.
My niche is money, business, and writing.
What helps is that money and writing stories tend to do pretty well on Medium. Plus, I’m always conducting a case study or experiment with both. When I do, I just write about it.
Money and writing topics do well on Medium
I wrote about money and side hustles before though, in my first few years on the platform.
Why didn’t I see growth as I have been?
The first thing I did when I came back to Medium last Summer/Fall was paid attention to successful stories — on and off Medium.
So, I would look at stories written by Medium authors that seemed to have done pretty well. I measure this by the number of claps the story receives and the engagement.
It’s true that a high engagement story may not receive a ton of traffic..same with the number of claps.
Nonetheless, I still pay attention to these two metrics to gauge whether or not a Medium story has received a lot of traffic.
I looked outside Medium too, at publications like Business Insider, CNBC, and Forbes.
My goal was to really study the headlines, and look at the article format and structure to see what they’re doing right.
From there, I took what I learned and used it as inspiration to craft my own stories on Medium.
I ramped up my production and began writing 2–3 articles per day. And, I did this for months.
I still try to write 2–3 articles daily but, I don’t hit that target every day.
When did I realize I hit one million views?
I was looking at my stats the other day.
I sorted stories from the highest number of views to the lowest number and I started counting. I stopped once I hit one million views.
If there’s an easier way to do this, please let me know.
