My Top 2 Medium Stories — Over 500,000 Views
How I did it and what I’ve learned
I was reviewing my stats today. I just sorted my stories by number of views and I was shocked to learn that my top 2 stories received over half a million views!
Here’s the proof…

As I reviewed these stories, I reflected on what drove me to wrote them, what they have in common, what I’ve learned, and more.
If you’re curious about these observations, keep reading. Let’s get into it!
2 Stories — 500K+ Views
Here’s what they had in common:
- Social media-based
- Contained a number in the title
- Mid-form content (around 3–4 minute read)
- Involve making money
So, what I learn is that the audience is interested in social media. The first story covered YouTube and the second covered Tik Tok.
They both contained a number in the title, which is one of my secret sauce methods for driving traffic to my stories. I try to include a number in the headline, if possible. This can be a dollar figure, a percentage, etc. Just a number. It works.
Both stories weren’t too long or too short. They were right in the middle. A 3–4 minute read isn’t too overwhelming. It’s easy enough to take less than 5 minutes of your time to consume the content and that seems to be the sweet spot.
Then, no surprise, they both talk about money. Specifically, making money, which is one of Medium’s top topics, in my opinion.
What inspired me to write both stories?
They were both based on personal experience.
I tried something and I shared my experience with it. I’ve been active on social media for years.
I’m a content creator and make thousands each month from social media.
Pinterest paid me over $10,000 last month! And, that’s just one network!
So, I like to talk about my adventures on social. What I’m doing, what I’m posting, what works, what doesn’t work, etc.
I decided to talk about something I know people may have been curious about. And that was, how much social networks were paying creators.
I have to admit, I had some help with the content idea.
I follow Shelby Church on YouTube. I noticed that she joined Medium (she did a YouTube video on it) and had a viral story on the topic of how much YouTube paid her for one million views.
I started noticing other creators posting similar content. It felt like my Medium feed was filled with those kind of stories.
I hadn’t heard of anybody sharing how much they made from 10 million views or 20 million views. I had nearly 70 million views. I knew it would stand out and pique the interest of others so, I wrote a story around that.
And then Tik Tok is a newer network. I hadn’t seen any stories around how much Tik Tok was paying creators. So, I used the same idea and applied it to Tik Tok.
What I’ve learned about hitting over 500K views on 2 stories?
I learned that social media-based stories are interesting to readers. I knew that “make money” stories were popular on Medium. The performance of both stories solidifies this even more.
I haven’t written much about social media lately.
Going back and looking at these stats makes me want to change that ASAP!
Anyway, those are some observations from those two stories.
