Is This the Best Way for Writers to Earn Online? The Medium-Newsletter-Book Framework

Not to mention, low income, and high inflation.
Everyone wants a side hustle, and I don’t blame them, I’ve always loved side hustles since I was a teen in the mid-90s.
Through trial and error, I think I’ve found the perfect framework for anyone looking to start a writing side hustle.
And not just a side hustle, it can scale over time to a full-time income.
The short version: write on Medium, start a newsletter, and publish a book.
WAIT, don’t leave!
It’s not as bad, as hard, or as time-consuming as you may think!
Let me break down my Medium-Newsletter-Book framework for you as simply and quickly as possible.
- Come up with a book idea.
- Create an outline of your book.
- Publish each section of the outline as an article on Medium.
- Create a minimalist newsletter related to the book idea.
- Promote your newsletter on Medium at the bottom of each story and in your bio/profile.
- Promote your Medium stories in your newsletter.
- When you’re done publishing all the sections of the outline, compile them to create a book that you self-publish on Amazon KDP.
- Promote the book on Medium at the bottom of each story and in your bio/profile, you can even apply to become a verified book author and then it will appear in your profile as a cool widget (see mine here).
- Promote the book in your newsletter.
- Repeat steps 1 to 9 as many times as you want.
As a bonus, if you pay the $5 a month ($50 a year) for Medium and are in an eligible country you can earn from the Medium Partner Program.
The more times you repeat this, the more everything will compound:
- Newsletter subscribers.
- Medium views, followers, and earnings.
- Books sales.
The newsletter, Medium blog, and book will all feed each other.
The amount of time and frequency you dedicate to writing will affect how many books you publish, and in turn how much income you make.
