I’ve never heard someone say:

I wish I had started my newsletter later.

In fact, it’s always the opposite:

I wish I had started my newsletter sooner.

I started my newsletter on March 1st, 2022 and I really should’ve started it when I started Minimalist Hustler back in February 2020.

Unfortunately, I can’t go back in time and change that, but I can help others start sooner, which includes my kids, and even your kids!

And with the rise of minimalist newsletters, it’s never been easier.

Although earning money here is definitely a possibility, the real benefit is for your kid(s) to learn about creating online and about the subject they have chosen).

As a bonus, you get to build something and spend time with them.

You can get them started for free in about 15–30 minutes.

Here are the 3 steps I’m taking my kids through so that they can each start their own minimalist newsletter.

  1. Choose what they want it to be about. It doesn’t matter what they choose, as long as it’s something they like. It’s not about finding a “profitable niche”, but finding something they enjoy. It can be about their favorite cartoons, toys, hobbies, sports, or anything else they can think of.
  2. Sign up for Substack. It can be a different platform but Substack has the best benefits and ease of use for free in my opinion.
  3. Create and publish the first issue. Keep it short, it can be just a few sentences and/or a few links. You can adjust as you go depending on how they feel.

That’s all there is to get it started, but here’s the most important part.

You need to decide on a posting frequency.

I would suggest weekly.

Set aside 30 minutes each week to create a new issue. Encourage them to save or bookmark any related content they come across during the week.

My guess is that they will enjoy this so much that they will want to go beyond the 30 minutes, but that’s where you may consider redirecting their energy to promoting the newsletter somewhere instead.

This really is a no-brainer when it comes to picking an online side hustle for kids, it has so many potential benefits for them, and you!

I’d love to hear/see all the different newsletters you start with your children, so share them in the comments.
