Minimalist Side Hustle Quickstart Guide — Amazon KDP
This is the 3rd of 7 minimalist side hustle quickstart guides.

What is Amazon KDP?
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a 100% digital side hustle, where you create (or buy) book covers and book interiors that you upload to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform, where they will advertise them for sale, and you get a fixed royalty amount for each sale.
You can create what are called no/low content books (i.e. notebooks), or medium (i.e. planners, guided journals, coloring books), and standard high content (i.e. novels, non-fiction) books that can be sold as eBooks, paperback books and/or even hardcover books.
It’s free to start, and once you’ve created (or bought) and uploaded the books, you can get paid many times for each sale, making this a great recurring/passive income stream.
The best part is that you can make books in any niche or subject of your choosing, as long as they aren’t infringing on any copyrights or trademarks.
Some of the links in this guide are affiliate links that may provide me with a small commission at no cost to you.
5 Steps to Get Started with Amazon KDP
Follow these 5 steps, It’s free and you’ll get a good idea if Amazon KDP is a side hustle for you!
Step 1 — Signup for Amazon KDP Obviously, you can’t start doing this side hustle without a KDP account, it’s free, click here to sign up. You can use your Amazon account to sign in as well.
Step 2 — Create the Book’s Interior (Manuscript) You can use any program you like to do this, and there are many different page counts, paper types, and sizes you can use. To get you started I’ve included (here) a 5x8, 60 page with college ruled pages (with bleed) PDF you can use as is.
Alternatively, you can download 30+ different interiors here for free.
Step 3 — Create the Cover Again there are many different ways to do this, but I use Canva as it’s free and easy to use. The first thing you need to do is determine the size of the cover design you need, which varies depending on the amount of pages, paper type and sizes of the pages.
The best way to find this is to use the KDP Paperback Cover Template Creator. Once you have that you can upload it to Canva, you will need to set the dimensions in Canva (in inches not pixels) to what the template says based on the following equations:
Canva Width = 2 * Book Width + Spine Width + 0.25 Inches Canva Height = Book Height + 0.25 Inches
For our interior here’s what the Canva dimensions should be.
2 * 5 + 0.14 + 0.25 = 10.39 Inches (Canva Width) 8 + 0.25 = 8.25 Inches (Canva Height)
Now you can put your template in there to know where to put your designs and text. Once you’re done, delete the template leaving only your design, and save it as a PDF.
I’ve also created a cover template (here) you can use on Canva for free, it works with the interior I shared with you in step 2.
Step 4 — Upload Your Design to the Marketplace Now that you have your interior and cover PDFs, you are ready to upload and create your first paperback book (we can’t upload a notebook as an eBook for obvious reasons).
Click the + paperback button once you’re logged in and follow the steps to create it. You will need to choose a title, a description, some keywords, which markets to list it, and the price for each one of those markets.
It’s pretty straightforward, and Amazon has quality help and support for each section as you go if needed.
Step 5 —Wait, Promote, and Get Paid It will take anywhere from a couple of days up to a week or so to get your book published live on Amazon, but once it’s done, it can start selling right away.
Amazon is huge, so your book is a needle in a haystack, but if it’s quality and popular, it will sell without anything else.
Feel free to promote as much as you want to help things along.
How To Level Up Amazon KDP Side Hustle
You could repeat the steps on the previous page, over and over again and make some recurring income without ever spending any money at all.
The more good quality books you have, the more recurring income you will make. It’s important to focus on both quality and quantity, as well as variety.
If you don’t like to create interiors or covers, you can always hire someone to make them for you through sites like Fiverr.
Another great way to take this to the next level is by following a more in-depth course like Print That Profits.
