Black History Month Series Vol 2

Is this Racist or Just a Funny ‘Race’ Story?

Why can’t white people just say that I’m black?🤣

A photo of me and my friend at the Lake

I live in a white neighborhood. I am the only speck of black pepper in the sea of salt around here.

I live by a lake and rode on my bike down the street to my neighbor's house to borrow her oars to go kayaking.

When I got there, she wasn’t there. Instead, I found ‘white’ contractors remodeling her house.

The following weekend I saw her at a cocktail party.

I told her I stopped by and then she laughed.

She saw I was confused by her laughter, so she explained that the contractors were trying to describe me but used every adjective they could think of EXCEPT the word ‘Black’.

How silly!

She was trying to figure out that whole week who they were talking about.

If he only said “this black woman rode on her bicycle to see you”

My white friend would know exactly who he was talking about. It’s easy to remember me because I am the only black person living in the neighborhood.

We laughed so hard at the white fear of offending black people.

More from me!

This piece is for Mary Anne Hahn who commented in my ‘Black History Month Series Vol 1’ story.

She replied :

“Hi Jaja — A very thought-provoking piece! These are the types of conversations that I wish whites had face-to-face with people of color in order more often in order to understand other perspectives without people becoming offended. Thank you for sharing.” in the following Piece,

I had to tell her this story.

I am THRILLED to hear you (as a white person) have this perspective.

Thank you, Mary!
