Is There Hope When You Are In Curation Jail?
What the heck is curation jail, and does it matter if you’re sent there?
The First time when the Medium curators chose one of my stories for distribution in topics, aka curation, was on November 14th, 2019. It was story # 9, which was published in P.S. I Love You. It was double curated in Spirituality and Self.
My last story curated was story #69 (yin and yang), incidentally, also in P.S. I Love You, also double curated in True Crime and Self on January 17th, 2020.
Since then, I have published 107 more stories as of this writing without being curated. Well, that is not entirely true. I had two other curated stories, one in The Ascent, and another in The Start-Up that lasted only 24 hours each before they were uncurated. Don’t ask me why? There was no explanation given.
Does that mean I am in the so-called curation jail? I don’t know.
Do I care? That’s a tough one to answer.
Let me explain.
Curation is supposedly the most sought after goal of every Medium writer because it can lead to your story possibly going viral. A viral story means a lot of exposure, which can turn into a lot of money. I don’t know.
Let me be clear about one thing before I go any further. This is neither a rant nor a complaint. I am merely making observations and weighing things out and trying to form a perspective.
So it is more of an “I don’t know, what do you think?” pondering.
I had the grand total of seven stories curated out of my first 69. That’s just around 10%, a far cry from the 50–70% target that is recommended by the self-appointed Medium gurus to shoot for.
I am not a tech-savvy person, so I am just going to give you the numbers I gathered from reading my stats going between different screens. No screenshots or fancy graphs. You’re going to have to take my word for it.
The following are the numbers for the seven curated stories in the chronological order of their appearance as of 5/5/2020.

*75 of the views were not counted for Medium’s stat calculations because they came from an RSS feed, of the publication, presumably.
Cumulative Numbers
These are the totals for all seven stories combined, over five and a half months.
Lifetime stats: 1627 views / 529 reads (32.5%) 137 Fans 8.4%
Lifetime earnings: $16.37
Not very impressive for a highly sought out goal. Again, not a criticism, just an observation.
I published 32 stories in the next 63 days without curation. I had averaged 25 stories per month up to my last curated post, and only 15 per month between January 17th and March 20th. The quality of my writing was improving, as I wrote regularly. I was writing about the same things, and submitting to the same pubs, so I don’t know why I wasn’t being curated, but I kept on writing and publishing.
On March 21st, I submitted my first story to Illumination and the second story on the 27th. I noticed something: the engagement in those two stories was phenomenal. Even though the number of views wasn’t that much higher, the number of reads and the average read time was. In other words, not only did I make money, people were reading and responding. Those were the two reasons for which I was drawn to Medium in the first place.
Suddenly, my whole outlook about writing on Medium changed. I was excited once more. I published 50 stories in the next 30 days, still without being curated, but I didn’t care anymore. I was engaging and interacting with my readers, and I was making new connections with other writers and editors. I was being challenged by Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, the innovative and inspirational brain behind #ILLUMINATION, and the other writers there. It is more than a publication; it is a writers’ community.
I have found my home.
I am working on another story about my experience since joining Illumination, and why it is the place to be if you want to make money knowing that your writing matters, and that it is making a difference.
As always, thank you for reading and responding. You might also enjoy these related stories.
