Is It safe to live in a forest? 🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳

Let’s face it. We are no longer a hunting civilization.

Our Only hunt is for bargains in the shopping mall or stupid desire for Black Friday overpaid items we need just for a few weeks or maybe months.

The overall consumptionism was one of many reasons we moved to the mountains right in to a heart of a 16 000 hectares (40 000 acres) national forest.

Don’t get me wrong, we are not the only people living here. There are around 500 people who share our settlement, but we somehow do not see our neighbors often, even for a few days or weeks.

I know, It’s not that wild like in the Tundra or Himalayas, but at least we are getting the feeling of being our own here.

Many friends who stay in the City asked us on occasions about the safety of living in a forest.

Surely there are many dangerous elements of living far away from people.

  • Wild animals like Wolves or Bears are a common in our area
  • Huge 35m Trees breaking during a Stormy weather
  • We might end up with no electricity for few days
  • Snow can last for 7–8 months, occasionally we get snowed in for a few days
  • The nearest Police Station is 12 kilometers away
  • The nearest Hospital is 45 km away, 1 hour drive.

Considering what the dangerous are in a City:

  • Crime related situations (Robbery, Burglary)
  • Unhealthy 24h Noise from the cars, adverts city in general
  • Air Pollution, Trash in the streets
  • Car Accidents or accidents in general
  • Unfriendly and Noisy Neighbors
  • Barking dogs in the morning or in the middle of the night
  • Being locked in your 4 corners (like during the pandemic)
  • An the list goes on

I think it’s a matter of choice. Some people like the city, others don’t.

However one of my favorite quotes says:

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear;

nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary.

I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms…
