$480,000 Medium’s Staggering Numbers

The number is mind-blowing. And don’t you despise the 100 gazillion articles about Medium?

While reading a post by Dr Mehmet Yildiz (Tech), the chief editor of Illumination, I was stunned by this:

Among the 27,000 writers accepted into the Illumination publication and its off-shoots, a staggering 8,000 are not paying members of Medium, resulting in a potential loss of around $480,000 annually.

Many of you reading this (all five of you) might contribute to it because it’s relatively easy to get published there, and the publication seems to have a big heart for helping new writers.

This jaw-dropping information is worth repeating. I find it surprising that Dr. Yildiz hasn’t dedicated an entire article to this topic (perhaps he has, but I haven’t come across it).

It’s significant enough to repeat, so here it goes again:

Out of the 27,000 writers admitted to the publication, a staggering 8,000 are not paying members of Medium. This results in a potential annual revenue loss of approximately $480,000.

My jaw dropped. Dropped to the floor. When I saw the numbers. If these half of the writers became Friends of Medium? Woo-doggie!

I’m not good at math, so I’d appreciate someone doing the math and including it in the comment section.

Also consider adding some suggestions as to what could be done as a group of Medium writers and readers to get more people to join, paying the $5 membership fee.

As a content creator, my earnings across all platforms are down. I don’t include Medium as one of my earning platforms because I basically earn enough to cover the $5 membership fee. Although one month, I did earn a whopping $54.

Before I proceed, yes, I plan to write the “What I Learned from Writing 100 Articles on Medium” article (actually, I’ve written 106 articles after this is published).

I digress.

I will go out on a limb and say that American writers on Medium have the dayum $5 to afford the subscription.

I cannot speak for writers from other countries because I have no information on them.

Let’s assume that out of the 8, 000 writers, 5,000 are Americans. I haven’t done the calculations, but it would be a significant sum of money if they purchased the $5 membership.

Somebody please put the math in the comment section.

What if these members became Friends of Medium?

I won’t push the Friends of Medium thing because, like everyone else, I have a ton of little fees that I pay for things. It adds up quickly.

Going from $5 to 12 is a significant increase.

Dr Mehmet Yildiz recommended, and I agree, we should intensify our efforts to convince writer friends and strangers to become paying members.

While my reach on Medium may be limited, I get about five readers per article. LOL.

If each of my five readers of this article were to encourage a few more, we could contribute to Medium’s growth as a platform where most writers would earn.

Dr. Yildiz said the motivation for writing the newsletter stemmed from addressing the strain experienced by the volunteer editors at ILLUMINATION publications.

It would be AWEsome if you could take a moment to read a few articles from Illumination. I’m particularly grateful for Aiden (Illumination Gaming)contributions

I appreciate you taking the time to read this article. Please consider clapping, leaving a comment (performing the math calculations I discussed earlier), and sharing it.

For non-paying members read the article for FREE here. With Love,Franki
