How to Respond to a Compliment?

Medium writers, a generic response on an article is not a backhanded compliment!

My aunt had a saying, “Never Give a Compliment Back.” It might sound a bit awkward as written, so I’ll clarify.

When someone complimented me, whether about the outfit I wore or something I had worked hard on, like a writing project - I had a habit of immediately returning the compliment instead of accepting and absorbing it.

I always said thank you, but it was followed by comments like my outfit wasn’t expensive or I got it on sale at a store, or it came from a thrift store.

When it came to getting into a writing program, I returned the compliment by saying there were a lot of openings.

Instead of saying thank you for the compliment and letting it soak in, I’d say thank you and proceed to put negative energy on top of positive energy.

Returning a compliment felt like second nature. Instead of soaking it in, I felt like I had to immediately return a compliment or downplay its significance.

There are many reasons why someone might return a compliment, and in my case, I wanted to channel what Lauryn Hill sang about in the song “Ex-Factor” and give reciprocity.

I am a humble person, and when I feel uncomfortable, I use self-deprecating humor. Especially as it pertains to my creative projects.

The other day, I received this review of my online course on memoir writing.

Because it was a public review, I didn’t want to be self-deprecating. But it was tempting.

I’m telling you, I have a thing about returning compliments, even if it’s a nice review.

Have you ever received that gave you a warm and fuzzy feeling?

Let’s consider a scenario where you’ve written a Medium article, and someone leaves a complimentary comment, something simple like “Great article!”

How would it make you feel? Would you think they didn’t read the article and were merely trying to be polite? Or that they read it but nothing impressed them, which is why their comment lacked specifics?

When I leave comments on Medium articles, I personally like to get specific

How to respond to a compliment? Say thank you.
