My husband was complaining that his phone was slow and the battery wasn’t lasting very long. I had a similar iPhone version and was not having any such problems.

Because I’ve experienced this problem before, I was highly suspicious that it was a software, not a hardware problem. In the past, Apple had a similar bug that caused a lot of people to go out and buy a new phone. But the problem was a simple software fix.

In fact, Apple and Samsung were fined for deliberately slowing down phones.

A lawsuit settlement appears to be in the works. If you purchased a new phone for hundreds of dollars you might get $25. Wooh.

Anyway, I looked around to see if there were any software glitches causing phones to be slow recently and sure enough…some people were complaining of slow phones last year:

Now I thought I read somewhere that an update last year fixed the problem but I can’t find that now. In any case, I asked my husband if his phone was up to date. Yes. He’s actually very good about that — maybe better than me.

The other thing was that right about this time, some malware came out that was preventing phones from updating to the latest version. Apparently all someone had to do was send you a text message and you could be infected.

It could be that even though his phone said it was on the latest version it was not.

Was it malware? Here’s the thing. I could try to dissect his phone and figure out if it had malware on it but I have a million other things to do. I told him to reset the phone to factory default and see if that helped.

He put up with slow apps and a draining battery for about another week before he finally tried it. He backed up everything “as if he was buying a new phone” as he puts it. He then reset his phone to factory default. Then he essentially put all the same apps and data back on his phone.

Like magic! The problem disappeared. He was concerned that whatever apps or data he restored would also restore the problem but it did not.

Oh and by the way, my husband’s phone stays on a separate network than my work devices! In fact, we were having some network issues while I was rearranging everything as I wrote about here:

So his phone wasn’t even ever on wifi for a while thankfully. Also when he did try to connect to wifi a lot of things didn’t work. Perhaps something phishy occurred on his phone? Not sure but seems to be gone now. The apps run fast and the battery doesn’t drain.

Moral of the story is, if your phone is running slow one option is to try to factory reset and update it. Might help.
