Initially, He Hated School

Today’s random word is: TEACH

It took just a few weeks for John’s parents to realize that traditional schooling was not for their child.

Every day there were complaints about his not being able to conform.

Conform? That’s not learning. They wanted him to be curious, to observe, to appreciate the natural environment, to make connections, to teach himself.

It’s how he behaved when they took him bush walking.

For their son to get down and dirty, take risks, light a few fires, whittle sticks with sharp knives, and swing from branches, was what they were looking for.

A nearby forest school solved the problem.

If you’re not already on board with writing drabbles, (short, 100-word stories, no more, no less,) do yourself a favour. Get stuck in! They are a lot of fun to write, but also serve as a lesson in tight writing, given the 100-word constraint.

And if you ever fancy a hot dog… Randy Pulley has an interesting take on the blasphemous side of it.

Here too, is the link to Nancy Oglesby’s Fiction Shorts where you may join and write your own drabbles.

Thanks to all the Medium writers who read my drabbles. I am ever grateful.
