Summary

The undefined website announces the 2024 Fiction Shorts Drabble Challenge, inviting writers to craft 100-word stories based on a daily random word to foster creativity, writing habits, and community engagement.

Abstract

The Fiction Shorts 2024 Drabble Challenge is an initiative aimed at energizing the flash fiction genre by encouraging writers to compose a drabble—a story exactly 100 words long—each day using a provided random word. This challenge, inspired by Eva MacInnes' drabbles, is designed to help participants enhance their creativity, develop consistent writing habits, and improve their ability to write concisely. The website outlines goals for the publication, including building a flash fiction community, maintaining consistency, and attracting more readers. Writers are instructed to tag their stories with 'random' and 'drabble' and to share the challenge with peers. The initiative emphasizes the importance of brevity in storytelling and aims to create a vibrant, supportive environment for authors.

Happy New Year!

I was remiss in my definition of a drabble, and want to make sure those who’ve already seen this know that a true drabble is a story of exactly 100 words. Not under as I previously wrote.

Who wants to try something new in 2024, a challenge of sorts? I got the idea from reading one of Eva MacInnes’ drabbles in response to a random word and liked it so much that I decided to make it a daily feature in Fiction Shorts.

I have goals for our little publication!

  1. Bring energy to the world of flash fiction.
  2. To read a lot of great stories.
  3. Meet more authors and build a flash community.
  4. Be more consistent.
  5. Get my neurons bouncing around enthusiastically.
  6. Gain readers to our publication.

The Challenge

This challenge is for you if you’re trying to boost your creativity, build a consistent writing habit, get concise, or just have fun!

Each morning, using a random word generator, I’ll post a word for the day. You are encouraged to write a drabble (a story of exactly 100 words … no more, no less.) in which the day’s random word features.

This is a great way to build your editing muscle.

Tag your responses with ‘random’ and ‘drabble’ so they go to the right place in the publication, and add the link to the day’s challenge.

If you are unfamiliar with a drabble, it is a fiction story of exactly 100 words. Most flash fiction is identified as stories under 1000 words. Many short-form publications require you to stay under 150 words. I decided to go with a drabble because I need to learn how to say things more succinctly. (Grammarly agrees. LOL)

Do you know other writers who might want to join the challenge? Share this with them, and if they want to join all they have to do is comment here to be added.

I look forward to reading your stories!
