Let’s Talk About the Implications of Fear and Anxiety from Rejections.

Thoughts on account suspension on online platforms affecting the mental health of creators

I have actively participated in online forums since such platforms first appeared. My experiences run the gamut from consumer to developer and every hybrid. I see all sides of the coin and understand the issues from every conceivable perspective.

I am inspired to write this piece after reading several concerns raised by writers and bloggers in my circles. The points concern people, lest we forget that humans have very real feelings and emotions.

They get treated like intangible entities by platforms and their reactions to dealing with rejections’ daily grind. They happen on the one micro-hand and on the macro-hand, possibly life-damaging terminations from platforms.

We experience rejections and account suspension sometimes without either notice or opportunity to defend ourselves or cure what could be an innocent mistake.

The debilitating sentiment relates to ruthless policies of suspending the allegedly violating profiles first and asking required questions later. This approach seems to create innocent victims, whether the profiles are guilty of a violation or not.

The issue raises concerns of both indirect and direct, potentially harmful implications. For example, the reputation, integrity, and aspirations of profile owners appear to be at risk.

In this post, I want to share my personal experience, touch on my observations and points of view and triangulate them with my knowledge gleaned from the online communities as food for thought for your comments and further detailed development by me.

During my interactions, some writers and bloggers pointed out that their accounts, blogs, content, and publications disappeared with no apparent reasons and no notifications.

We all experience setbacks in life. It is the core fabric of life. It is in our DNA, and history informs us that life is full of risk. There will always be risks at personal and professional levels.

My points are not merely theoretical. This piece reflects actual instances of fact-based realities. I have tasted the bitterness of rejections and account suspensions on multiple platforms over the years.

Being a victim is not fun and can negatively affect one’s mental health. Like many other people, I have experienced many setbacks on online networks. I shared details of my setbacks and reflected on my experience transparently in a story titled Immaturity of AI in Social Networks.

The other day, I read a piece of content from an influential writer highlighting anyone can be a victim on social networks. This thought leader has a realistic approach that we are lucky enough to use these services. He lost his LinkedIn account multiple times due to mistakes. But he got back because his integrity was evident on the platform.

Some accounts are accidentally suspended on different platforms. Some are canceled due to uninformed reporting to AI. It has happened to me on multiple platforms.

Social networks are full of both good and vicious people. While good people uplift the others, hostile people display jealousy. They strive for others to fail. They enjoy giving harm to others.

Inexplicably, libel reported to platforms goes unaddressed despite congressional protections to encourage platforms to moderate content, which protections are far from permanently assured depending on which way the wind is blowing in capital cities of the globe.

We need to learn how to protect ourselves from the harm of these people. They are not bad people in nature, but their behavior is bad for us. In an ideal world, those people and the platforms must be held accountable, or nothing will change.

As protecting ourselves may not be a panacea to address the issues, I suggest writers and bloggers diversify their online presence and time investments.

Instead of relying on a single platform or publication, my suggestion is to diversify content and publish on multiple platforms. Platforms can come and go. Individuals or corporations own them. These entities can change their mind and policies anytime. And the user has no right or capability to revert the changes.

The pragmatic approach for content developers would be syndicating all content in a personally owned platform with a loyal audience that can be communicated using an active mailing list and newsletters.

For the purpose of diversification, I encourage contributors to write for various platforms, and different publications and even create their own publications.

Reason and emotion in proper balance is spiritual intelligence. Emotions are real, and they notify us something is right or wrong. We need to listen to our emotions. However, living with uncomfortable emotions like fear and anxiety is not healthy for writers and bloggers.

Our mental health is critical for surviving and thriving. Both fear and anxiety are essential survival emotions. We need to experience them. Rather than suppressing or denying them, we need to acknowledge, understand the sources, and deal with them using positive actions.

Our emotional intelligence is a critical success factor when dealing with fear and anxiety or other destructive and uncomfortable emotions. Emotional diversity and granularity are positive things to increase our emotional intelligence.

Acting despite fear and anxiety demonstrates our courage. The more courage we have, the more successful we can become in our personal and professional life. Courage determines our success.

Some people call me fearless. I am honored, but the term fearless is not an entirely accurate statement for me. I am not a robot, even though I deal with robots as part of my profession. I experience fear and anxiety, just like anyone else. Fear and anxiety are human conditions.

My approach is to take calculated risks and channel my associated worries into positive actions despite the fear. This approach motivates and inspires me to produce good outcomes while maintaining my mental health.

I practice using my spiritual mentor Marie Curie’s wisdom. She taught me there was nothing to be feared in this life — just things to be understood. Living with constant fear and chronic anxiety can cause damage to our mental health. They can adversely affect our creativity and productivity.

We need to focus on the keyword “understand” in Madam Curie’s statement. Understanding what we can control and cannot control requires effort, taking time, and mandates actions. As Franklin D. Roosevelt said, we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

Thank you for reading my perspectives. I wish you a healthy and happy life.
