How I got to 100 followers in one week—and how you can do it, too!

I started my journey on Medium on October 2022, completely unaware of its incredible potential. I was a consistent writer on many other major platforms, like social media, Academia, Reddit, LinkedIn, Quora, etc. I joined Medium because I was frustrated with Facebook’s data breaches scandals and Academia’s limited access due to premium plan. However, I came on this platform with the same mindset that I had on Meta and LinkedIn, namely that I’d just write and let my unique voice charm Medium members into following me.

AND IT DID NOT HAPPEN!

I woke up from this dreamy-bubble on December the 12th 2023 when I came across an article titled something like “how I gained 100 followers, and how you can do it too”. I sarcastically clicked on it just to skim through. And then my eyes caught something I could not believe at the moment. It was like an epiphany. It all made sense, now. If this were to truly work, I’d be damned for this whole time before.

AND IT DID!

It took me over 13 months to understand one simple formula of how Medium follower-growth works. When I learned about this rather fundamental technique, I was pretty pissed at myself for not having done my due diligence on the platform early on when I joined to learn how things work around here.

“The first golden tip”

However, I also made huge mistakes along the way of following random people in desperate hopes of triggering others to follow me, too.

AT THE BEGINNING; IT WORKED; BUT LATER IT DID NOT NOT!

Simple formula: engage with those in your target group or your niche. Simply put, interact with those members who you think have the same interests as you do.

I wasn’t focused

When I learned about this follow-to-be-followed tip, I started immediately smashing every ‘follow’ green botton I see in front of me until I am maxed out. I’d go on somebody’s page, click on followers or the following, and start following random people from top to bottom. Pretty standard, right?

Well, this is how I did it at the beginning. I started seeing results after only a few hours of implementing this technique. It lit fire inside of me.

I disciplined myself into maxing out this limit every day on the exact same time — Never missed a second.

I was holding my breath to see 99 turn into 100 followers. Joy overwhelmed me, even while I was walking outside in freezing temperatures (-4 degrees).

Interact with other members

The same article from which I got the golden tip also taught me to interact and engage with other members by showing them that I read their work.

So, my plan was pretty simple: everyday, I would select a 40–60 lucky members, visit their pages, clap their stories, highlight interesting parts of their great memories, and comment and engage with them personally.

This technique elevated me and my humble page in the eyes of those I visited and interacted with. They would come on to my page and reciprocate. When I continued seing results of this, I started doing this consistently.

The result was that in the following few days, my account exploided to 500 followers.

I WAS SHOCKED, GRATIFIED; AND EXTREMELY DELIGHTED.
