How You Can Become an Online Content Creator

Not some generic suggestion you read everyday.

Okay- so before we start, it’s not going to be a cliched suggestions, it’s from my experience after experimenting many different things.

If you are following me for a while you know, I am an aspiring writer, a content creator, and have been publishing my content on Medium since January 2021.

I publish once in a week. Along with my blog, I have a weekly free Substack newsletter and a LinkedIn newsletter. Alright, enough about me :)

I accidentally became a content creator last year when I wrote my very first blog post last year.

Honestly, I had no idea how to write online or even where to begin. But what I know is, I thrive on learning. When I started last year, I had zero idea in mind, but over time, I fell in love with many aspects of creator’s life and realized that it’s exactly what I want to do.

After one year, I know for a fact, this isn’t easy but 100% worth it.

“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”― Stephen King

So if you want to become a content creator, keep this in mind:

1. Write. Write. Write- doesn’t matter how bad it is.

There’s something to be said for writers who are simply unafraid of failing.

They just produce, day after day, and hope that they’ll be able to get something out there that people will read and enjoy.

That something to be said is: you and I can be one of them too.

We just have to start writing. We have to go through the act of opening up Medium.com, clicking on the “Write” button, and getting our fingers moving on the keyboard.

And then we must go back up to that green button and hit “Publish.”

2. Do not think about views or stats.

Since I started writing on Medium, I’ve gained followers, been asked to write in publications, been picked up for further distribution, and had a lot of great feedback from family and friends.

Along every single step of the way, I’ve had to learn what all of that means.

There are stats, charts, graphs, and more to let us know that we’re liked and who likes us.

Previously I would write on my blog and just wait for comments to roll in, or see some traffic on Google Analytics, and hope that it meant people actually enjoyed what I had written.

I was so worried, when I got back into writing again, that my words wouldn’t be well-received or that people wouldn’t like what I had to say at all.

With this realization, I stopped looking at the stats. I relived the pressure off my head and words starting pouring out whenever I decide to write my piece.

3. Start small and try to write on various topics you are passionate about.

I get it, it’s a creator economy or what it means to online creators. From my articles, I observed, the articles where I was hell vulnerable and shared my personal experience did better than the ones that had less personal viewpoints.

“One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.”― Jack Kerouac

It’s not always easy to share your deepest darkest thoughts, share your vulnerability, and life updates.

I have been very open about me in some of my articles and I received more comments, likes, and DMs. These articles took me more than 10 days to write and in fact nearly the same time to publish because I didn’t know how people were going to react and the fear of getting trolled or abused.

But ultimately, I learned being authentic is all you need.

Create multiple small content pieces on different but related topics.

4. Virality doesn’t mean anything. Focus on creating your own tribe- loyal audience.

Our stories, articles, poems, listicles, self-help blogs, journals, and words are our own.

There’s no one else who can write them.

Leaving a lasting legacy in this world is one of our greatest achievements possible. A part of that is simply writing down who we are, where we’ve been, what we’ve done, or what we experience.

Choosing to not share our words out of fear, means they don’t get shared. They simply run around in our head where no one else can find them.

We should never make choices on the basis of fear.
