How We Recall Moments That Make Us Happy

My thoughts on how people respond to happiness

We all want to be happy in life. However, life is designed to give us surprises, headaches, worries, sadness and, of course, our favourite is happiness.

We wish that happiness will last forever, but our memories seem to have limited capacity. If I ask you what makes you happy in February, you may or may not be able to recall.

Maybe journaling is one tool that can help, but we need to slow life down to a turtle’s pace if we want to write down our thoughts and feelings. I do not think many people seriously journal their thoughts and feelings, but if you are one of them, I would be curious to know.

One modern tool is the use of social media. You make a post on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or TikTok. You record your happy moments with a broad smile and a dance, show the world your accomplishment or joy, and receive loads of likes and comments! In a way, you have it recorded into the platform.

Of course, you can also write a lengthy story on Medium and share your happy moments, and many readers will be delighted to hear a personalised account of your joy. Again, you have a record of that happy moment.

If you are married or have a special friend, they can be your partner who can share and celebrate your happy moments. They can also help remind you of the occasion in case you forget about it sometime in the future.

Lastly, some keep talking about those moments as if they happened yesterday. For example, you have a specific happy moment in your life, and you keep repeating that to all your friends today, tomorrow and even weeks later. You want others to know, and you also want to re-live that happy moment.

Congrats, I must say. It’s your pride to share it over and over again. But just a word of caution, be careful that your achievement is not a put-down to somebody else. For example, you share about getting a distinction for a subject to someone who fails the same paper. Be wary of that!

In conclusion, people always want to talk about their happiness, but be a little gracious when sharing with others. Some people need your encouragement more than your expression of success and accomplishment.

Finally, I wish you a happy day with many happy returns! Please continue to share your happy moments!
