How to Write Great Fiction — Tip 1

Reading comes first

I imagine that for fiction writers, the reading to writing ratio is 100 to 1 or more. At least, that’s my opinion and has proven true in my case.

Reading comes first

Why is reading so important and why does it need to come first? Consider the following reasons.

Inspiration

Fiction writing is powered by inspiration and imagination. Those elements are essential but also exhaustible. They need to be recharged on a regular basis to maintain a writer's ability to keep ideas flowing.

Reading the works of other writers, especially in the genre you love to write, will keep the spark alive. Even if you only have short spurts of free time, use some of it every day to read.

Knowing what a reader wants

If you’re an avid fiction reader, you have specific criteria for the type of fiction you enjoy. You know what plot structure, voice, viewpoint, and pace you prefer in those stories. Knowing those things as a reader puts you in a much better position as a writer to deliver a good reading experience in your books.
