How to supercharge your earnings EARLY as an online writer
I woke up to a nice surprise this morning.
Maybe this platform really is fixing its algorithm and that’s why my earnings more than doubled day-over-day.
Or maybe my decision to quit whining, leave the pity party behind, and start publishing every day again is what drove the rebound.
I like to think it’s the latter (I’m a bit of a control freak), though it may be a mix of both.
As you’ll know already if you’ve been following me over the past week, I’m doing an experiment to see if I can make enough money to retire from commuter life within a year by publishing every day on multiple platforms and investing my earnings.
Here’s today’s update:
How much I need to retire comfortably: $250 CAD per day
What I earned on Day 7: $30.59 (writing), $1.80 (YouTube) — $32.39 total
My Publish Every Day update for Day 8
As you can see, now that I’m back to publishing every day, this chart is moving in the right direction again.
The big reset
I consider myself to be starting almost from scratch on this site.
After earning thousands of dollars per month over the past year, changes to the MPP crushed my earnings and discouraged me from writing.
As I wrote here, it’s extremely tough mentally to be doing really well, then all of a sudden find yourself almost back to Square 1.
I went from earning almost a full-time income, which I talked about in this video …
… to earning about the same amount of money as I did in my first month.
Ouch.
I’m not unique, however — the content game is constantly shifting, and you need to be ready to adjust at all times.
It even happens to people way bigger than me.
Consider top YouTuber Shelby Church, who recently expressed her frustration with changes to that site’s algo.
I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve allowed my negativity to take over A LOT recently.
But I’m not a quitter (anymore lol), so I decided to reset not only my strategy but also my mind.
I needed to come back at my quest to become a full-time online content creator with the same mindset I had when I first started here.
Big Mo
I got off to a fast start on this platform a little over a year ago.
I’d have to go back and count again, but I’m pretty sure I published 50+ full articles in my first full month.
I worked hard to build some real momentum.
The author of my favorite self-improvement book calls this “Big Mo”, and the beautiful thing about it is, once you have it, the less effort it takes to maintain it.
On the flip side, if you let it stop, it takes a lot more muscle to get it going again.
So what I’m trying to do now is get back to basics and build that momentum again.
Thus the Publish Every Day project.

My advice
I get asked for advice about writing online a lot, and one thing I would say is: try to produce a lot EARLY, when the excitement of your new venture is strongest.
That’s what I’m trying to get back to.
Rebuilding the excitement of starting something from scratch.
Not only will you be solidifying a good habit by staying consistent, the early gains you see will sustain you mentally through your first couple of dips if you build enough momentum.
I was discouraged, but now I’m following my own advice and seeing some real gains in these early days.
And as a result, I’m motivated and having fun again!
