This article has nothing to do with politics or Bernie Sanders.

Does your writing feel like a pandemic Bernie Sanders sitting alone in the cold watching Joe Biden’s inauguration? Your writing may have the longevity and usefulness of a beloved cultural and iconic political figure, but it sits alone on the stone steps, wearing mom’s mittens. Don’t be alone; get attention.

You may remember me as the guy that said you could make $1,000 from Medium in 3 months. I’ve scoured this site and read all the books (including Tim Denning’s book) about how to make it big here. I’ve learned a lot in the last month, and I’m sharing it with you.

Be Friendly Like Keanu Reeves

To make it here, you’ve got to help others. You have to respond to comments and leave comments on other people’s articles. You don’t need to hit them all. That becomes impossible very fast. But don’t ignore them. Try. Give it a little effort.

Be like Keanu Reeves. Sometimes you just need to sit down next to the homeless guy and kick off your shoes and go barefoot. Sometimes, you give up your seat for ladies on the subway. And sometimes, you give up your money so that others can have food to eat. Be more like Keanu.

Today, I’m channeling my inner Keanu. EXCELLENT!! **guitar solo** I’m sharing with you something that’s increased the reads on my articles and gotten me top writer in two categories. If you use this technique, it may make it more difficult for me, but that’s okay. I’m choosing the red pill over the blue pill. We can all succeed here, right?

I try to teach by including examples in my writing. For instance, my article about Lady Gaga, which isn’t really about Lady Gaga. It talks about using SEO to draw in a crowd.

Let’s Get Sexy Like Sharon Stone

Okay, I’m going to spread my legs and let you in on my sweet little secret. It’s simple: use tags correctly. Let’s first understand two fundamentals about tags.

First, only certain tags are eligible for top writer status. Some, like “productivity” are widely used and difficult to get the top writer tag. Others, like “energy” are hardly used. It took me two articles while I had 70 followers to become a top writer in energy. Here’s the list of top writer eligible tags.

Second, know the difference between tags and topics. Tags are anything you use to ‘tag’ your article. You can use up to five of them. Never use less than five tags. Never. Supposedly, tags help the algorithm direct readers to articles that they enjoy reading. Topics, on the other hand, are the interests you choose when you sign up with Medium. You can easily — key word EASILY — click on a topic and pull up best performing and recent articles. Here’s the current list of topics.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

Use Tags that are Top Writer & Topics

You only have five tags to choose from; maximize them. Choose a tag that is eligible for a top writer award that is also a tag that matches topics. Here’s why:

If you use a tag that is also a topic, when readers select a topic, which is EASY to do, your article has a greater chance of showing up. When more readers find and read your articles, they are considered popular. When you use a tag that can be a top writer tag and it’s a popular article, you get the award (after this happens a few times). It automatically shows on your profile under “about.”

I want to let you know that Medium also says “frequent posters” under the list of top writers in each category. I don’t know what this means, but I’ve seen people get top writer that post daily and a couple of times a week. As I mentioned, I got top writer in energy in my earlier days (last month) with 70 followers and two articles on the topic.
