How to play Zed and win?

The first Medium episode from Zed’s Chronicles on Summoner’s Rift

Well, well, well…

I would like to start with: ‘Hello, dear gamers and League of Legends fans!’ but I know there are not many gaming enjoyers, not to say League of Legends.

Even so, I want to start a series that includes stories from my games.

Considering that League of Legends is part of my daily routine, I know I won’t ever lack ideas to write about and post on Medium! Haha!

So here I am with my first story, where I share about a game I had.

I’m Zed, leading a squad with Ornn, Azir, Senna, and Veigar against the bloody Vladimir, the radiant Lux, the cunning Morgana, the elusive Kai’Sa, and the icy Sejuani.

They have a team that scales better and has more CC (Crowd Control). At first impression, they have bigger chances to win, not forgetting I play a non-meta jungle champion.

But you know that Zed is my favorite, and I play him a lot.

1. Top lane tango — Min 10:45

Alright, let’s kick things off with a shuriken.

We’re in the top lane where Vladimir thinks he’s the king of the hill. Ornn and I had other plans. I slink into the shadows, and just as Vladimir’s about to make his grand escape, I unleash my razor-sharp shadows. Ornn follows up with a majestic display of horns, and boom — Vladimir bites the dust.

Top lane supremacy achieved!

2. Bot lane skirmish — Min 12:45 — This is not how to play Zed and win

Down in the bot lane, it’s like a thunderstorm of abilities.

Morgana’s hurling Qs left and right, Kai’Sa’s diving like she’s in a pool party, and Lux is turning the place into a disco.

Azir jumps into the fray, trying to play the hero. I weave through the chaos, shadows dancing, but alas, the combined might is too much. Of course, I die, and this is the first mistake of the game.

This is not part of how to play Zed and win, haha!

3. Jungle ambush — Min 14:45

Jungle time, baby!

Sejuani thinks she’s having a quiet picnic with the Raptors, but little does she know, the Rift has other plans. Veigar, Senna, Azir, and I — we crash the party. Sejuani gets hit with everything in our arsenal, but guess who snatches the kill? None other than our pint-sized Veigar. Morgana and Lux?

They were there only to watch!

4. Top lane hero again— Min 17:30

Top lane drama is incoming! Again!

Morgana and Vladimir decide Ornn is their favorite punching bag. I can’t let that slide, can I? I dash in like a ninja (Zed is a ninja), taking down a low-health Morgana before she knows what hit her. Ornn’s horns gleam with gratitude, and the top lane is officially a Zed-protected zone.

Could be this the way how you play Zed and win, by protecting the top lane?

5. Drake disaster — Min 19:40

Now, here’s where the plot thickens. Veigar and I get ambitious — we want that dragon. But uh-oh, Sejuani, Lux, and Morgana crash the party.

Lux throws her ultimate like she’s aiming for the stars, Sejuani shows off with full HP, and there I am, caught in the crossfire. In my overconfidence, I tried to secure the dragon, but my health bar had other ideas.

Lesson learned: don’t dance with dragons when you’re low on health. Another one from the series this is not how you play Zed.

6. Jungle showdown — Min 21

Now, let’s talk jungle antics.

I find myself deep in enemy territory, facing off against Morgana lurking in the bush. I smell trouble, but hey, I’m Zed.

I dance around her skill shots, dodging a skill shot here and there. When the showdown begins, I unleash my ultimate on Morgana, and she responds with her own. I retreat with my ultimate back-to-safe.

Sejuani’s on her way, but a quick flick of the F key puts me out of her reach - shadows, blades, and a dash of deception — Zed style.

But there it comes: a swift combo — Morgana goes down.

7. Another jungle drama — Min 22

Time for another brawl, this one set in the jungle on the blue-buff side.

Lux and Sejuani think they’ve cornered me.

Lux throws her light-bending skill shots, and I dodge them like a seasoned dodger.

Not all of them, because she caught me with her E. Low on health, but not on determination, I decided to make my stand. I unleash my ultimate on Sejuani, and just when it looks like lights out for me, Senna’s ult comes to the rescue, keeping me alive.

The scene ends with Lux and Sejuani hitting the respawn timer. Unfortunately, Senna and Veigar join them in the afterlife, courtesy of Vladimir’s surprise guest appearance.

But we are still in a good spot!

8. Top lane is the real battlefield — min 23

We're back to the top side, where the action is heating up.

Azir and I find ourselves against Kai'Sa and Morgana, who desperately try to keep us away from their precious turret. Over the wall, I throw a glimpse of the others preparing for a skirmish. Azir starts his majestic retreat, utilizing his passive.

Feeling a bit cheeky, I throw a poke at Kai'Sa and leave my W shadow behind. Tactical, right?

I switch to it.

But of course, Kai'Sa dashes into invisibility under her turret, and Morgana rushes in to lend a helping hand. Forced to switch back to my R shadow, I evade Morgana's binding.

My W is back again, so I’m going to finish Kai’sa! Didn’t expect that, huh?

However, a misfired Q costs me, and I fall victim to Morgana's wrath.

This is a tale of greed, shadows, and missed skill shots.

9. Baron buff bliss and another episode with Kai’sa — Min 28

After 5 minutes of boring gameplay, I push botlane with the Baron buff.

Kai’Sa thinks she can defend the second-tier turret.

But I have other plans.

With the power of the Baron, I make short work of her — no chance to escape my Zed skills.

I don’t know. Has Kai’sa a thing with protecting turrets?

10. Jungle escape masterclass — Min 30

Back to the jungle, where I attempt a daring kill on Lux.

Little did I know, their entire team was converging on my location. It’s a close call, and I throw everything in my arsenal to escape the clutches of death.

The battle concludes with one casualty on our side and three on theirs. Post-fight, we secure the dragon without breaking a sweat.

I am sorry you can’t see the video of it. The escape was epic.

11. Lux alone? Not quite — Min 30:30

After securing the dragon, I decide to make a play, thinking Lux is all alone.

Surprise, surprise — Morgana’s there to welcome me with open arms, I mean, Q.

A colossal misjudgment on my part, combined with low health, leads to an unnecessary play. Oops!

This is another huge mistake.

12. Pushing alone gone wrong — Min 32

We secure the Baron buff again, and I set my sights on pushing top.

But hold on — Vladimir has other plans.

A surprise attack catches me off guard, and before I can react, I am taken away by the shadow.

Unfortunately, not mine. But those from the realm of death.

Unfortunately, my recording software didn’t capture the last moment.

But we have won.

And this is how you play Zed and win.

Wait, wait, wait! Haha!

I am not finished.

After my games, I like to watch replays and see my mistakes (I lie. I don’t do this at all. But I should do so because this is how you can improve).

Mistakes

1. I forced plays even though they weren’t necessary (3, 6, 7, 8, 11);

In League of Legends, you make a play only if you have a reason. Taking kills is not a real reason every time

2. I should not have tried to take Dragon while I was low HP.

You usually go for objectives only if you don’t risk doing so (5).

3. Pushing alone in the mid-late game is not a solution (12).

Some of these are common among League of Legends players. Hopefully, this story will reach Google, and more players will see it.
